This ramen restaurant opened in 1954. The restaurant continues to serve ramen noodles made according to a traditional method using a green bamboo trunk as a rolling pin, a rarity in this day and age even among restaurants which serve traditional Sano ramen. And even compared to other restaurants which still use green bamboo trunks, this establishment's vaunted noodles are particularly fine and crinkled. These noodles go perfectly with a soy sauce, pork bone, and chicken bone broth. The restaurant's delightfully crispy gyoza pot stickers are already perfectly flavored, meaning they can be enjoyed as-is without any dipping sauce. This restaurant is one of only a very few which continues to preserve the traditions of old-fashioned Sano ramen.

"Although officially founded in 1868, the name of this venerable confectionary shop can be found in documents from the late Edo period. Its most famous offering is its Koin Monaka. These monaka (bean jam-filled wafer cakes) feature a motif inspired by the ancient official seals (Koin) of the Ashikaga Clan. Other popular items include its Koin Senbei (rice crackers), Takauji Senbei and Takauji (Dorayaki, bean jam filled pancake) , the latter of which was inspired by the character of the Ashikaga Takauji, the first Ashikaga shogun. Another popular item is their Monaka Gokko, which allows you to enjoy the classic flavor of monaka in a casual ""make it yourself"" style."

This old shop was founded as an oil shop during the Edo period, but then went on to manufacture miso. They use domestically-produced soy beans to make their “aburaden miso” —naturally fermented in a traditional wooden barrel, with no additives, to produce a rich, aromatic taste. At the dengaku miso shop in the corner, you can try konnyaku dengaku, tofu dengaku, and sato-imo dengaku. The five buildings, including a Meiji-period storehouse, are designated as National Tangible Cultural Properties, as well as a charming fireplace in the back.

Although it looks like an old civilian home, inside you’ll find chairs and tables, and a modern Japanese mood. Popular items include the crisply sweet “cream anmitsu” and “mame kanten” —agar covered in black honey and red peas. The “honkaku karakuchi Indian curry” is well received, featuring a good mix of spice and onion sweetness.

This French restaurant located in Tochigi City, Tochigi Prefecture makes use of a retro building originally constructed as Ashikaga Bank in the early Showa period. Lots of Western-style items available, like “special hayashi rice.” The building is a Nationally Registered Tangible Cultural Property, and has been used a set for movies.

Tochigi Areas

Most visits to Tochigi revolve around Nikko, a small city home to the spectacular, lavishly decorated Toshogu Shrine and Nikko National Park with its mountains, lakes, waterfalls, onsen, and wild monkeys. Neighboring Oku-Nikko is an extension of the fantastic scenery famous for its autumn leaves, while Tochigi’s capital, Utsunomiya, is the only place in the world where you can find oya stone beautifully exhibited in temples and the Oya History Museum.
