A Japanese confectionery shop across from the Nikko Natural Science Museum. The shop has an engraved wooden sign and a sense of history. It sells items like manju buns, monaka bean-jam wafer, and yokan sweet bean jelly. Their Kekko Manju is a local favorite featuring homemade red bean jam made from Hokkaido grown azuki beans wrapped in a thin crust sweetened with black molasses. Gently sweet and subtly salty, the handmade buns make the ideal Nikko souvenir. The thin skins of the Hokkaido-grown dainagon azuki beans used in the tsubuan bean paste of their monaka treats provide a rich flavor. Their chestnut yokan which is carefully prepared with hand-peeled chestnuts and their mizuyokan which is only available in winter, make ideal gifts.

Tochigi Areas

around-area-map

Most visits to Tochigi revolve around Nikko, a small city home to the spectacular, lavishly decorated Toshogu Shrine and Nikko National Park with its mountains, lakes, waterfalls, onsen, and wild monkeys. Neighboring Oku-Nikko is an extension of the fantastic scenery famous for its autumn leaves, while Tochigi’s capital, Utsunomiya, is the only place in the world where you can find oya stone beautifully exhibited in temples and the Oya History Museum.
