This observation tower in Sakata Port also serves as a lighthouse, a rarity in Japan. The first floor features the Minato monoshirikan Hall, which exhibits panels educating visitors about the port. On the seventh floor, 18 meters up, the observation room offers a view of Sakata Port, along with the Sea of Japan, Takasago Wharf, cruise ships, and Japan Naval SDF ships.

    駐車場も広く、入場料 無料、エレベーターですぐに上がれます。眺めだけ見るなら最高です。 一階には展示物もありますが 長時間いるのは難しいかと思います。

Nishi-Zao Park, a popular park with families, has wide slides, a large playground and athletic equipment, and a barbecue area set in an extensive site. Yamagata Yamagata-shi Zao Onsen 940-1
This observatory is on the peak of Mt. Torikabuto, at 1,387 meters above sea level. It offers a panorama view of Zao's onsen town and the surrounding mountains. This is also where god of good fortune and business success Zao Daikokuten, one of the Three Divinities of Zao, is enshrined, and every October 5th there is a festival for him here.

    Yamagata Akumi-gun Yuzamachi Fukura Chokaisan
About a 20-minute drive from the Sakata Minato Interchange off the Nihonkai Tohoku Expressway via the National Route 7, this observatory is about halfway along the Chokaizan Blueline parkway which presents its seasonal displays of fresh verdure in the summer and ardent reds in the autumn. This observatory is located in the parking area of the Oodaira Sanso government inn, at about 1000-meter elevation. From here one can enjoy a panoramic view of the Shonai plain, and see the Tobishima Island directly ahead. On a clear day, one can see as far as the North Oga Peninsula in Akita, and the Awa and Sado Islands of Niigata to the South. It has a magnificent view of the sun setting in the Sea of Japan and of star-studded night sky.

Yamagata Areas

around-area-map

Although often overlooked, Yamagata prefecture by no means lacks appeal: the Yamadera temple trail through the mountains, deliciously tender Yonezawa wagyu, and over 100 steaming hot springs, most notably Zao Onsen, await visitors. When winter comes, the snowcapped peaks become dotted with skiers by day and onsen-goers by night, while summer brings the celebration of juicy Yamagata cherries.
