    The Nishinomiya Family were retainers for the Satake clan that moved to Akita at the beginning of the Edo period. This residence, which was built in the most prosperous period for the land owner from the Meiji to Taisho periods, comprises five storehouses and one main building. The main building exhibits old documents and artefacts. Visitors can enjoy tea and sweets in the charming Japanese sweet café. The garden is also beautiful and you can see its different seasonal faces such as the cherry blossoms in the spring and the colorful kaki fruit in the autumn.

    角館駅に最も近い武家屋敷が西宮家の建物でもあり、5つの蔵と母屋で構成されている。仙北市総合情報センターの向かいにある建物でわかりやすい。白壁と壁を割るように木が枠を作りとても美しい側壁を成しているのが特徴だ。立ち寄ってみたい武家屋敷。

    A museum dedicated to presenting materials relating to Namahage, traditional ogres which are part of the folk customs of Oga, located a 20 minute drive by car from JR Hadachi Station. The museum building is built with “Kanpu-seki” stone from Oga outside and Akita cedar inside, and various rare and precious materials relating to the folklore of Namahage are presented in the museum’s atmospheric confines. Highlights include the museum’s display of 110 Namahage costumes and 40 Namahage masks actually used in areas throughout the city. The rows of diverse costumes and masks standing together is truly an impressive sight. Visitors can also put on a real Namahage costume themselves and take a commemorative photo.

    This is a science museum located along the Ushuhamakaido road in Hirasawa Takarada, Nikaho city. The museum hosts a memorial hall dedicated to Kenzo Saito, who discovered industrial uses for the magnetic iron-oxide derived substance ferrite and founded TDK, as well as to his supporter Teiichi Yamazaki. They also have displays in magnetism, and a research workshop with experiment area supervised by Denjiro Yonemura.

    科学的なあれこれを息子に体験させようと訪問。 有料なのでシビアに見てやろうと思っていたが、コンテンツは豊富で飽きずに居られる。動作が微妙な物もあるが、終盤にはでんじろうプロダクションがプロデュースしたコンテンツ群で、楽しい印象でフィニッシュできる。展示室最後のボルダリングは科学ではないと思うが、息子は運動もたっぷりできて満足していたし、定期入場券購入も検討する。

On display are materials related to novelist Yojiro Ishizaka who worked as a teacher in the Yokote area for nearly 13 years. The building itself is built to resemble a townhouse and storehouse from the early Showa Period.

    A museum that opened in 1986 to teach the world about the history of Ani, a town that prospered due to mining. In addition to the copper pyrite excavated from Ani Mine there are also examples of iron pyrite, galena, and quartz drawn from the mine. Also on display are tools used in the mine, illustrations of what it was like to work in the mine during the Edo period (in picture scrolls), special Ani Namisen coins that could only be used in the mine, a survey report of the mine conducted by German engineer Mezger, a details of the miner mutual support system (buddy system).

    かつて操業していた阿仁鉱山についての資料館です。外国人技師の住宅として使用されていた建物も保存されており、興味深く見学できました。訪問時は外装工事中で建物がよく見えなかったのは少し残念でした。

This area is believed to be the birthplace of boy's baseball in Japan and the sport still flourishes here today; in turn, this museum contains exhibits on professional and amateur baseball in Japan and around the world. The museum also has a library and theater room and additionally serves as a multipurpose hall.

    大仙市にある施設、かみおか嶽雄館。 日帰り温泉があり、宿泊もできるようになっていました。 駐車場が広く温泉も400円と格安でした。

    An abandoned mine for the copper mines in Osarizawaaza Shishizawa, Kazuno City with mine deposits discovered in 708, Osarizawa Mine long contributed to Japan’s mining industry until it was closed in 1978, only to be opened to the public as mining ruins. You can try out some gold panning and other programs, you can tour the 1.7 kilometer-long mine. It is a valuable industrial heritage.

    とにかくその規模に圧倒されました。これまでいくつも鉱山を見て来ましたが、ここまでダイナミックな鉱脈や発掘現場を見られるところはないと思います。とても勉強になりました。30分から40分歩きます。急な坂などはなく、歩きやすいです。特別コースプラス10分かかりますが、絶対おすすめです。

    This is a museum founded in 1977 to honor the Akitainu breed of dog located about 15 minutes' walk from Higashi-oodate Station on JR Hanawasen line, in Odate city, Akita prefecture. The third floor hosts the Akitainu History Room with displays of materials on the dogs. From April to November, you can come see the real thing in the kennels.

    A Shinto shrine located in Iwase Kakunodate-machi, Semboku City. Dedicated to Amaterasu Omikami, the shrine is the guardian shrine of Kakunodate and, although there are various theories on the matter, it is said it was founded in the distant Azuchi-Momoyama period. The shrine is the location of the Kakunodate-matsuri festival, known for its traditional float battles designated a National Important Intangible Folk Cultural Property, and each year during the festival held for three days from September 7 to September 9, 18 traditional floats are pulled around the town and eventually bashed into each other. Performances of traditional Semboku Kitaura kagura shrine music and dancing are also held.

    角館の武家屋敷通りから南方に少し離れた場所にあるジンジャ・シュラインです。石段を登った高台によく手入れされた境内がありました。御朱印あります。

    Learn about the history of the Kosaka mines at this museum, which has a rich collection of cultural artifacts on display and introduces the history of Lake Towada, the natural scenery of Kosaka Town, and more using graphs, photos, and dioramas. Outdoors, there’s also a steam locomotive guest car that carried Emperors Chichibu no Miya and Takamatsu no Miya. It’s about two minutes by car from the Kosaka Interchange on the Tohoku Expressway.

    小坂鉱山事務所とあわせて見学。入館無料です。小坂鉱山の歴史や暮らしが常設展示されていて、興味深かったです。屋外展示も充実しています。

    A local museum located in Hamanota, Kisakata Town, Nikaho City. Kisakata used to be known as a pretty scenic place with islands both large and small. The museum has displays on the history and culture of Kisakata and the lagoons in the area which were lost in the Great Kisakata Earthquake of 1804. The museum exhibition includes the “Lagoon Period of Kisakata” with models of what the area looked like at the time, and paintings on folded screens, etc. Another display to look for is “Writers and Artists Who Visited Oku-no-Hosomichi and Kisakata” which introduces the literary people such as Matsuo Basho who visited Kisakata. Exhibitions are also held here such as work by Shuzo Ikeda, a woodblock print artist from Kisakata Town.

    象潟(きさかた)駅から徒歩で少し歩いた場所にあります。『池田修三作品展』と『歌枕、象潟の旅』という企画展が開催されてました。館内は撮影禁止でした〇

    This museum is located in Shishigamori Shakanai, Odate City. Making use of the former Prefectural Odate Higashi Senior High School building, the museum contains exhibits on the nature, history, folk customs, and industries of Odate. There's also an adjoining exhibition room displaying magewappa bentwood boxes, a traditional area craft; and a children's science center where kids can learn about science hands-on.

    タイトル通りです。あまり印象に残っていません。何もないので大館は好きなのですが、逆にそれだけ。ただ、コンビニなどは普通にあるので不便でもないです。

    This is Japan's first full-fledged manga museum, located inside Masuda Fureai Plaza in Masuda Town, Yokote City. They showcase work by Masuda-native manga artist Takao Yaguchi as well as original pictures of manga by artists from Japan and overseas. They also run special exhibits, talks by manga artists, and book signings periodically. The museum is closed for renovations until April, 2019.
  • Gozanoishi Shrine

    Gozanoishi Shrine was founded in 1650 and received its name when the lord of the Akita Clan, Satake Yoshitaka, took a rest while visiting Lake Tazawa. It is famous for features such as the “Nanairogi (seven-color tree)” near the vermillion-lacquered torii gate that gave rise to seven varieties of trees; “Katagashira-no-reisen,” the spring that Princess Tatsuko is said to have drunk from that turned her into a dragon; and the “kagami ishi” stone that reflected her figure. It is on the shore of Lake Tazawa and offers beautiful scenery for visitors to marvel at. It is about an hour and 10 minutes by car from the Morioka Interchange on the Tohoku Expressway.

    This art museum located in the Nakadori district of Akita Prefecture’s Akita City opened in 1967. It moved to its present location in 2013, and was redesigned by architect Tadao Ando. The museum stores and exhibits numerous famous artworks, though the bulk of its collection is from 1930s Western-style painter Tsuguharu Foujita. Sights to see include the more than 20-meter long mural “Annual Events in Akita.” The unique architecture is a must-see, featuring elements such as a spiral stairway without any supports and a pond that looks out towards Senshu Park.
  • Kakunodate Aoyagi Samurai Manor Museum

    The old mansion and prestigious Yakuimon (roofed gate) of the Aoyagi Family, vassals of Lord Ashina and Lord Satake. The architecture of the main building has remained unchanged for about 200 years and is designated as an Important Cultural Property. There are valuable armor and helmets, relating the history of the Aoyagi family, displayed in the armory. The Kaitaishinsho Gallery has displays about the history of the Aoyagi Family, the faithful Odano Naotake and “Kaitaishinsho” (a book of anatomy). There is an experience corner, shop, and a coffee shop for you to enjoy your journey back in time. In spring there is a new species of cherry tree that is said to be the only one of its type in Japan, called the Aoyagi eight-petaled red weeping cherry.
  • Roadside Station Takanosu – Odaiko Hall

    This museum dedicated to Japanese taiko drums is located inside the Roadside Station Takanosu building. Exhibits include a drum registered in the Guinness Book of World Records as the largest taiko drum in the world. In the museum's activity zone, visitors can watch videos of taiko drum performances conducted at various festivals, and try beating a real taiko drum themselves.
