The Hamabe no Uta Ongaku-kan Museum is a historical museum dedicated to the life and work of Narita Tamezo, the composer of “Kanariya” (“Canary”), which is said to be the earliest Japanese children’s song. The Museum takes its name from one of Narita’s best-known works: “Hamabe no Uta” (“A Song at the Seaside”). The Museum is housed in a retro, Western-style building. The first floor has listening spaces where visitors can listen to various different songs; the second floor is devoted to exhibition space. The stage in this part of the Museum has a large grand piano and a life-size model of Narita Tamezo; player piano performances are accompanied by explanations of the history of children’s songs in Japan.

Akita Areas

around-area-map

Famed for its sake and samurai, Akita prefecture offers quintessential Japanese culture in a non-touristy setting. Alongside the celebrated rice paddies and historical sites of the region lies dramatic natural scenery in the form of the rugged coastline of the Oga Peninsula and the Dakigaeri Gorge, best visited in autumn, when the leaves begin to change color.
