The origin of kokeshi wooden dolls is said to have been in Naruko towards the end of the Edo period (1804–1830) when they were made as hot spring souvenirs by woodworkers who carved bowls and trays and this is said to be the oldest production area for these dolls. The museum opened in 1975. It exhibits kokeshi offered up for the National Kokeshi Festival, presents the procedure for making the dolls, demonstrates the spinning lathe and has a wholesale shop that sells the highest number of kokeshi dolls in Naruko. It is around six minutes by car from JR Naruko Onsen Station.

Was hoping to see more of kokeshi doll in this museum, however, all the descriptions are in Japanese. Overall, the museum looks dated. It was cold inside the museum and only 3 rooms of display...

A museum in TeraikeNakamachi, Toyoma Town, Tome City. It's located in the former Tome Police Station built in 1889 and specializes in police-related exhibitions. Meiji period police cells have been reconstructed from foundations discovered during building reconstruction and an attached scout tower built at the same time as the building has been designated as a Tangible Cultural Property of the Prefecture.

A history museum located in the Tome-cho neighborhood of Tome City, known as Miyagi Prefecture's Meiji Village due to its many historical buildings. The museum conveys what education was like for a typical Japanese school student from the Meiji to the Taisho periods. The building itself was a real elementary school building in 1888. The school was designed by Kisaburo Yamazoe, the first Japanese person to travel to the west to study architecture. Inside, real desks and chairs from the school's heyday as well as life-sized mannequins show what schooling looked like at the time.

Miyagi Kurihara-shi Wakayanagi Kamihataoka Shikimi 17-2
A 15 minute drive from the Tsukidate interchange on the Tohoku Expressway. Situated on the north shore of Lake Izunuma, known as a mecca for migratory birds, this center contains information and exhibits on wild birds and other area wildlife, introducing the natural abundance and rich cultural and social environment of the Ramsar Convention on Wetlands-designated Lake Izunuma and Lake Uchinuma. Exhibit tables in the shape of Lake Izunuma and Lake Uchinuma placed on top of a giant 16 meter in diameter aerial photo of the area make it fun to learn about the wildlife of the marshlands. There are live observation cameras and field scopes in the viewing lounge on the second floor.
