- This island is a 15-minute bus ride from Miyako Station on the Sanriku Railway (Miyako to Kuji) Rias Line. At Jodogahama Terminal Bus Stop, visitors get off and walk for five minutes. Hidejima is an island, 1. 8 km in area, off the coast of the hamlet of Hidejima. The island gets its name (“Sun Appearance”) from the way that the sun appears to be rising out of the island if one is watching from the shore. The island is home to Japan’s largest nesting area for the critically endangered band-rumped stormy petrel, so it has been recognized as a National Monument and a part of Sanriku Geo Park. Humans are forbidden to land on the island and can see it only from a distance on one of Miyako Jodogahama Boat Cruise.

Iwate Areas
A northern Tohoku prefecture promising peace and quiet, Iwate is sparsely populated, replacing people with snow-capped mountains, history-rich sites, and fields of crops that are to thank for the region’s delicious local cuisine. Meander along the three-city Golden Route, where you’ll visit the grand Buddhist temples of Hiraizumi and the Tono folk villages before tasting the three famed noodle dishes of Morioka.
