This memorial museum is located in the center of Naumann Park, approximately a five-minute drive from Churui Interchange, or a 15-minute drive from Sarabetsu Interchange. It was built to commemorate the 1969 excavation of the first Naumann elephant, the complete fossilized remains of which were discovered when one of its molar teeth was found by coincidence. Inside the museum grounds, a model of the restored skeleton and a parent & child model are on display, in addition to other artifacts and remnants of the excavation. Even more impressively, the building itself is made to resemble a Naumann elephant, and extending 100 meters from the car park to the entrance, is a length of copper plate that depicts the history of evolution up to the birth of the modern human.

Hokkaido Areas

around-area-map

Not just a prefecture but an island of its own, Hokkaido is the most northerly prefecture and island of the Japanese archipelago. Arriving in Hokkaido, which is rural and bursting with breathtaking nature, means entering a world where vast national parks, towering mountains, and natural hot springs can be found at every turn. Come December, these natural splendors freeze over and morph into a winter wonderland.
