    Shirakami-Sanchi is the general name for an extensive mountain range that extends from the southwestern part of Aomori Prefecture to the northwestern part of Akita Prefecture, and the area was registered as a World Heritage Site in 1993. Natural beech forests are distributed throughout this area which protects a precious ecosystem inhabited by a variety of wild plants and animals and is said to be the largest in East Asia.

    It is a mountain in the center of Miyajima Town in Hatsukaichi City. It is the highest peak in Itsukushima (Miyajima), and it has been the object of worship for a long time. It is believed that the mountain was first used by Kobo Daishi in 806. Miyama Shrine is near the summit of the mountain, Daisho-in in the foothills, and Itsukushima Shrine at the base. The view from the mountaintop overlooking the opposite shore is famous for having once being praised by Hirofumi Ito. There are several hiking trails where historical sites and cultural properties are scattered, and you can choose a course to suit your physical strength and available time.

    Mt. Kintoki is a 1,212 meter high mountain located on the boundary between Shizuoka Prefecture and Kanagawa Prefecture; it is famous as the setting for the Kintaro legends. From the summit, there are spectacular views of Mt. Fuji, Sagami Bay and Hakone. There is an easy hiking path to the summit, where there is a teahouse and toilets, so even people with little hiking experience can have a safe, enjoyable time climbing to the top. On the route up to the summit, visitors pass the Kintoki-jinja Shrine, which is dedicated to Sakata no Kintoki, the warrior who is said to have been the model for the legendary hero Kintaro, as well as a small shrine dedicated to Kintaro’s hatchet, and various other spots associated with Kintaro.

    This volcano in Tottori Prefecture is the highest peak in the Chugoku area. Part of the Daisen Oki National Park the mountain has an altitude of 1,729 meters and was selected as one of Japan’s top 100 mountains and 100 landscapes. The west side is a beautiful cone shape also called “Mt. Fuji of the east, Daisen of the west”. The main “summer mountain climbing course” aims for the summit while allowing climbers to look out over one of Japan’s greatest beech forests and natural monuments, Daisen Kyaraboku, a kind of Dwarf Japanese yew, growing en masse. This is popular with beginners and children too.

    This is the general name for a group of volcanoes located south of Aomori City, composed of six mountains including Kita Hakkoda and Kushigamine with Odake having the highest peak, divided by Minami Hakkoda. This is one of the top 100 mountains in Japan. There are beautiful beech forests and valleys, with several walking courses where one can see many types of grassland and alpine plants. The ropeway installed at Tamoyatsudake is used by many hikers and skiers. This is one of the world’s areas of heaviest snowfall, known for the 1902 “Hakkoda Mountains incident” in which 199 of the 210 members of the Aomori army 5th regiment were stranded and died in a blizzard.

    A 13-minute ride on the gondola aerial lift system takes visitors to UNKAI TERRACE at the top of the mountain, where they can view the “Sea of Clouds,” which seems to flow down like a waterfall as it crosses the Hidaka Mountains; this spectacular scene created by the forces of nature is truly stunning. The Cloud Walk enables visitors to enjoy the feeling of “walking on clouds.” UNKAI TERRACE is open from mid-May to mid-October. The exact opening hours vary depending on the time of year, so please check before your trip.

    With a height of 1695 meters, Mt. Odaigahara straddles the border between Nara and Mie Prefectures and has been selected as one of Japan’s 100 best mountains. In addition, it was designated a national park in 1936. The mountaintop is broadly divided into two plateaus, the East Plateau, which contains numerous beauty spots, including Hidegatake Peak, and the West Plateau, which contains an primeval forest that is home to rare plants and animals. Since the West Plateau is a restricted area, hikers need to obtain a permit in advance. The mountain receives heavy precipitation throughout the year, and it is covered with one of the world’s several temperate rainforests.

    This is the highest peak of the Suzuka Mountains, located in Komono Town, Mie County, Mie Prefecture. A park is maintained at the summit, in addition to the Fujimi-iwa Observatory and the Japanese Antelope Center. Visitors can ride to the summit on the Gozaisho Ropeway or hike up one of the various mountain trails. The walking routes vary in difficulty from beginner to intermediate and hard. A variety of flowers bloom in each season, as well as the red leaves in the fall, and frost covering the trees in the winter. There is also Yunohana Hot Spring at the foot of the mountain, where visitors can rest from their climbing and walking.

    This is a mountain in Nagasaki City with a height of 333 meters. The view from the mountaintop is spectacular and looks out over Nagasaki City and Nagasaki Bay, and Mt. Inasa is a popular sightseeing spot visited by many seeking a nighttime view in particular. The observatory was renovated and reopened in 2011. Enjoy the “10 million dollar night view” from this space featuring a floor inlaid with illumination that twinkles like precious stones.

    One of the peaks which make up Mt. Aso, it is 1,506 meters high. Situated in the almost exact center of the central group of volcanic cones, this peak is the most active of the volcanos of Aso. Its craters are numbered one through seven, and there is a caldera lake - a crater in which rainwater and spring water has accumulated - known as Yudamari. Access to the lake area may be restricted at times due to the emission of volcanic gasses.

    Together with Mt. Gassan and Mt. Yudono, this 414 meter tall mountain is considered one of Dewa Sanzan, the three sacred mountains of Dewa. This mystical mountain has long been famous as a center of Shugendo, a syncretic religion which combines Shinto and Buddhism. The shrine at the top of the mountain, dedicated to the Buddhist deity Avalokitesvara (the Buddha who saves people living in our current world) was founded by Prince Hachiko. Because the shrine (and the mountain itself) is dedicated to granting the currently earthly prayers of living people, the mountain is also known as the “Mountain signifying the current world.”

    Mt. Yotei is a renowned mountain that is emblematic of Hokkaido and also counts among Japan’s One Hundred Most Celebrated Mountains. Located in the southern part of Hokkaido’s Shiribeshi area (northwest Iburinokuni), it is a stratovolcano with an elevation of 1,898 meters. Because of its beautiful shape which is similar to Mt. Fuji, it is also called Ezo Fuji. In addition to more than 100 varieties of alpine plants, many mammals and birds, including Ezo red foxes and Hokkaido squirrels, also live there nurturing a rich ecosystem.

    This mountain's highest peak is 848 meters high, and spans Kyoto City in Kyoto Prefecture to Otsu City, Shiga Prefecture. You can pay to go to Hiei Sancho Station using the Keifuku Electric Railway Eizan Ropeway. In addition, many tourists go to the Garden Museum Hiei art museum and other facilities. At Eizan Cable's Cable Hiei Station, the Hiei Yama Beer Garden is held every year around August.

    A mountain located at the southern edge of the Hida Mountains which has 23 peaks, seven lakes, and eight plains. The mountain's highest peak, Kengamine, is 3,026 meters tall. There are two roads which lead to the Tatami-daira plateau 2,700 meters above sea level—one on the Nagano Prefecture side which leads from the Norikura Plateau through Prefectural Route 84, and one on the Gifu Prefecture side which leads from Hirayu to the Nirokura Skyline. A shuttlebus can also be used to travel either route. Alpine flower fields sprawl in the vicinity of Tatami-daira and visitors can enjoy the sight of the beautiful flowers as they climb. The area is also a popular destination to enjoy fall foliage in autumn. It takes approximately one hour and 30 minutes to climb to the top of the mountain from Tatami-daira. At the top of the mountain you'll find a stunning view of the Hida Mountains.

    A mountain situated on the border between Chihayaakasaka Village, Osaka Prefecture and Gose City, Nara Prefecture. 1,125 meters high, it is the highest peak of the Kongo Mountains, which also includes peaks such as Mt. Nijo and Mt. Katsuragi. Katsuragi Shrine and Tenporinji Temple, founded by the mystic En no Gyoja, are located near the top of the mountain. Because the top of the mountain is part of Katsuragi Shrine's sacred grounds, access to this area is currently prohibited, but there is a shop and picnic area a short distance below the top. The mountain is a popular sightseeing destination and on weekends many people come here to take in the sights or go hiking and mountain climbing. Those who are not experienced mountain climbers are recommended to ride the Mt. Kongo Ropeway to Mt. Kongo Station, enjoying the spectacular scenery along the way, then hiking the rest of the way up from there.

In addition, the quality of the views from this mountain have led it to be included among ""The100 Views of Mt. Fuji in Kanto"" and ""The 50 Best Scenic Spots in Kanagawa Prefecture."" At the summit is a famous statue of a white horse."

    Every year, azaleas cover Mt. Yamato Katsuragi with color around mid-May. The season begins with the buds swelling in early May, reaching full bloom in the middle of the month, and the season ends by late May. During full bloom, when it is said you can see a million azaleas in one glance, the area gets crowded with visitors, so you can expect full parking lots and a wait of 20 minutes or more to ride the ropeway. It is recommended to wait until the crowds subside in the evening to take the ropeway, spend the night at Katsuragi Kogen Lodge, and then enjoy the azaleas in the morning.

    "A mountain located in Hakuba Village, Kitaazumi County, Nagano Prefecture. ""Happo-one"" means ""mountain ridges in all directions,"" a reference to the spurs which extend in all directions from Mt. Karamatsu in the Hakuba Mountain Range. Many people come here to enjoy trekking, and the course is dotted with scenic spots overlooking Happo Pond and 11 of Japan's 100 most well-known mountains. Rare alpine plans and Natural Monument-designated species such as Japanese serow and ptarmigans live in the area."
