  • Mt. Haruna

    A 1,449 meter tall mountain located in Takasaki City, Gunma Prefecture and one of the Three Mountains of Jomo. At the top of the mountain are Lake Haruna, a caldera lake, and the Haruna-Fuji lava dome central volcanic cone. A ropeway takes visitors to the top in around three minutes, and from here you can get a sweeping view of the Kanto Plain and the mountains of the Joshu area. Many events are also held here and in winter visitors can enjoy the magical site of the Lake Haruna during the Illumination Festa nighttime illumination festival.
  • Mt. Akagi

    Located practically in the center of Gunma Prefecture, this polygenetic volcano is considered one of the most beautiful in the Kano region as well as one of the 100 most beautiful mountains in Japan. From May to July, a diverse variety of azalea species come into bloom, dying the mountain lovely colors. A variety of other activities can be enjoyed on the mountain throughout the year—in addition to mountain climbing, there's camping, hill climbing, trail running, wildlife observation and activity programs, and in winter, there's snowshoeing and pond smelt fishing on frozen Lake Onuma.
  • Mt. Kusatsu-Shirane

    A general term used for the belt of active volcanoes which include Mt. Shrine, Mt. Motoshirane, and Mt. Ainomine in Kusatsu Town, Agatsuma District, Gunma Prefecture. At the top of the mountain is Yugama Crater Lake, one of only a very few mildly acidic crater lakes in the world. Currently, the Volcanic Alert Level for the mountain has been raised and visitors are prohibited from coming within a one kilometer radius of the crater. The Mt. Shirane Ropeway gives riders the chance to enjoy a sweeping view of the Kusatsu Highland and Kusatsu's hot spring district from high above, and the station at the base of the mountain in front of the Sessho restaurant will take you to the “mountaintop” station at the foot of Mt. Motoshirane and Mt. Ainomine in about 13 minutes.
  • Mt. Myogi

    Consider to be one of Japan’s Top 3 Strange Views, this 1,100-meter-elevation mountain spans Tomioka City, Annaka City, and Shimonita Town in Gunma Prefecture. The views over the Kanto Plain—packed with wild and bizarre rocks—is wonderful. The best views come in early summer with the fresh green leaves, in autumn with fall leaves, and in spring with the “sakura-no-sato” and its 5,000 blooming cherry trees in 45 varieties.
  • Mt. Haruna-fuji

    Mt. Haruna-fuji is the 1,390-meter-high central volcanic cone in the summit caldera of Mt. Haruna—one of Three Mountains of Jomo. Resembling the beautiful shape of Mt. Fuji, the natural landscape of the mountain reflected in the lake is symbolic of Gunma Prefecture. There is a ropeway serving Mt. Haruna-fuji, one that offers a tremendous view of the gigantic Kanto Plain.
  • Mt. Asama

    A famously active volcano 2,568 meters tall straddling the border between Nagano Prefecture and Gunma Prefecture. The mountain is believed to have been active for several hundred thousand years and continues to make noise today. Asama Plateau Rhododendron Park is located at the foot of the mountain, and here from May through June, some 150 thousand large flowering rhododendrons delight visitors with the beauty of their blossoms. The park is also beautiful year-round and offers seasonal scenery such as Japanese azaleas and fireweed as well as Japanese larch foliage in the fall.
  • Mt. Kasho

    A sacred mountain on which, according to legend, a mountain ascetic became a tengu, a type of long-nosed goblin. The mountain towers behind the Ryugeiin Miroku-ji Temple, which was founded in 848 by Ennin, head priest of the renowned Enryakuji Temple. From the top of the mountain, visitors can see Mt. Mitsumine and Mt. Komochi to the south. Visitors can also enjoy the mountain's seasonal scenery, with fresh verdure in spring, birdsong in summer, and fall foliage in autumn. There's also a mountaineering course for expert climbers which involves climbing a crag called Oshodai.
  • Mt. Osutaka

    This is a 1,639 meters high mountain in Ueno Village, Tano County in Gunma Prefecture. The south side of the mountain borders Nagano Prefecture and Mt. Osutaka stands at the border with the mountain ridge on the Gunma side. At the summit is a third-class triangulation point called Mt. Taishaku. The mountain neighbors three other mountains called Mt. Takamagahara, Mt. Suwa and Mt. Ogura, all rated as intermediate level mountains to climb. Also, the memorial monument for the Japan Airlines 123 flight crash that occurred on August 12 in 1985, stands at the point known as “Osutaka-no-One”.
  • Mt. Sukai

    This is one of “Japan's 100 famous mountains” located between the border of Gunma Prefecture and Tochigi Prefecture. The summit is 2,144 meters high and the beautiful mountain is an old stratovolcano that has eroded, and is now covered with moss, forests and flowers. There is a long ridge extending east to west, however more than 500 meters of the mountain has fallen on the north side. There are two climbing routes from the Ginzandaira on the Tochigi Prefecture side or from Fudosawa on Gunma Prefecture side. For beginners. it is recommended to climb the mountain from the Gunma side. It is close to Mt. Sukai and you can climb to the top in a relatively short period of time.
  • Mt. Hotaka

    This is one of the “100 Mountains of Japan” and is situated at the border of Minakami-machi, Kawaba Village and Katashina Village. It includes a chain of seven peaks of 2,000 meters, including the main peak Mt. Okihotaka at 2,158 meters above sea. The ancient volcano is said to have formed about one million years ago, and there are many deep valleys created radially through erosion. It is known as a spiritual mountain where people have worshipped since ancient times and near the summit of the mountain is a statue of Yamato Takeru-no-mikoto, from which the mountain name was derived.
  • Mt. Tanigawa

    At 1977 meters in elevation, this mountain is one of Japan’s Top 100 Mountains, located on the border between Gunma and Niigata prefectures. The peak splits into two peaks—called “Toma no Mimi” and “Oki no Mimi” —with great climbing courses for both beginner and advanced climbers. Known for steep, rocky areas and harsh weather changes, there are ropeway and lift options to help. The mountain ridge is home to a wealth of alpine plants, and the overlapping mountain lines and diverse natural colors provide you with a fantastic view.
  • Mt. Hiragatake

    This mountain along the border of Niigata and Gunma is one of Japan's 100 most famous mountains. It's known for the views of Mt Hiuchigatake, Mt. Keizuru, Mt. Shibutsu, and others in the Oze Mountains that you can see from its steppe like mountaintop. Near the mountaintop you can find a large granite megalith called Tamago-iwa (Egg Rock), an unusual rock so called because of the egg-shaped rocks around its foundation. The Siberian dwarf pine also grows here and as you look out across the magnificent landscape you'll see them dotted across the marshy grasslands. This area has been chosen as one of Japan's 500 Important Wetlands.
