    Okinawa Miyakojima-shi Hirara Higashinakasonezoe 1166-287
This museum is located south of Miyakojima Botanical Garden about a 15-minute drive from Hirara Port or about a 20-minute drive from Miyako Airport. It is notable for featuring in-depth exhibits about the nature, history, folk customs, and culture of Miyako Island. The museum is divided into two exhibit halls: the No. 1 and No. 2 exhibit hall. The No. 1 exhibit hall, which is focused on archaeology and history, presents information on archaeological sites that have been excavated such as the Hokama Site. It also features a recreation of life on Miyako Island from the Meiji period to the early Showa period. The museum also holds regular themed exhibits and special exhibits as well as hands-on educational activities for children, lectures, and other events.

Okinawa Miyako-gun Tarama Mura Nakasuji 1098-1
"This museum is located just west of the urban area on the northern part of Tarama Island, which lies between Ishigaki Island and Miyako Island. As the name suggests, it features many exhibits related to the region's culture and especially its folk performing arts. Visitors can see items including genealogies and family registers as well as costumes and scripts used in the Hachigatsu-Odori. Literally meaning ""August Dance,"" the Hachigatsu-Odori is the traditional harvest festival of Tarama Village. It has been designated as a National Important Intangible Folk-cultural Property. More than just a facility for the education of children, the museum is a place where tourists can gain a deeper understanding of the history of Tarama."

This handicrafts shop is located about a 10-minute drive southeast from Miyako Airport. It sells kimono and other dry goods made with Miyako Jofu, a local textile with a history dating back some six centuries that has been designated by the national government as a Traditional Craft Product. The shop also sells accessories made from local textiles including Miyako Asaori and Miyako-ori that make great souvenirs. Visitors can view exhibits including the raw materials and implements used to create these textiles. It is even possible to watch live weaving demonstrations on weekdays. Groups of 40 or more people should call before visiting. A video on the weaving process can be viewed weekends and holidays when there are no live demonstrations.

  • Head Tax Rock (Bubakari Rock)
    Travel / Tourism
    Okinawa Miyakojima-shi Hirara Nikadori 90
This historic rock is located north along the road from the Grave of Nakasone Tuyumya about a five-minute drive from Hirara Port or about a 25-minute drive from Miyako Airport. The name of the rock, which is called Bubakari Rock by locals, stems from a legend that a head tax had long been levied on every islander once they were taller than the rock. In fact, a head tax was levied by the cash-strapped government of the Ryukyu Kingdom in 1637. Every resident was required to pay the tax for 35 years from age 15 to 50. Men were required to pay the tax in millets. Women, meanwhile, were required to pay it in Miyako Jofu textile. The rock serves as a reminder of the hardship imposed on the people forced to pay this tax until 1903.

Okinawa Areas

around-area-map

Let go of your image of a busy, ordered Japan and replace it with crystal-clear waters, white sand beaches, and relaxing folk music: You’ve arrived in Okinawa. A world away from the high intensity of Tokyo, Okinawans appear to live a laid-back beach life on this paradisiacal tropical island that lies in the middle of the East China Sea almost 1,000 kilometers south of mainland Japan’s most southern tip. Home to a spattering of islands, prepare yourself to discover underwater caves, star-shaped sand, and an island culture sometimes unrecognizable from mainland Japan.
