    The Kume Island sea turtle building is a museum and display facility dedicated to sea turtles, which is located on Oujima Island in Kumejima District. The facility breeds sea turtles (which are on the verge of extinction); visitors can get a close view of sea turtles swimming about in large tanks; and there are display panels and videos providing information about their natural habitat; the facility also holds occasional special events when visitors can have the opportunity to handle turtles themselves. The facility also has displays of over 2,000 shells from different shellfish found in Kume Island.

    The Kumejima Museum is located in Kadekaru, Kume-jima cho near Municipal Kumejima Hospital. The Museum has displays about Kume-jima’s natural heritage and history - focusing on the four main themes of “Kume-jima’s Natural Heritage,” “How Kumi-jima has Changed Over Time,” “Kume-jima’s Historical Treasures,” and “The Island Way of Life”—so visitors can learn about the Island before they travel round it. A tablet PC digital guide system has been introduced for the permanent exhibitions, so that visitors can listen to explanations of the exhibits in English.

    This castle ruins are located on Mt. Uegusuku, the highest mountain on Kume Island with an elevation of 310 meters. The big 360-degree panoramic view overlooking almost the whole area of the island is just “overwhelming’”. It’s a perfect viewpoint that allows views as far as Hateno Beach, Awakuni Island and Tonaki Island on clear days.

    Kumejima Hotaru no Sato Natural Park Kumejima Firefly Pavilion located along the lower Urauchi River is a protective observation facility for firefly and opened in May 2000. It breeds fireflies including the Kumejima firefly, a Natural Monument and one of Japan’s rare fauna and flora, and creatures such as birds, insects and fish related to fireflies. Inside the facility, the exhibits include pictures, specimens and documents, so you can learn about the diversity of animals, particularly fireflies, as well as nature and the environment on Kume Island.

    Kumejima Tsumugi no Sato Yuimaru-kan Exhibition Museum is about Kumejima tsumugi, which is a traditional Okinawan craft and designated as a national Important Intangible Cultural Property. Inside the museum, you can observe the process of tying kasuri (dotted pattern), dyeing and knitting, and see documents related to the history and manufacturing processes for Kumejima tsumugi as well as various works using Kumejima tsumugi. You can also experience activities such as knitting a coaster and dyeing a bandana (a booking is required in advance.)

    A historic building located in Nishime, Kumeijima Town, Shimajiri County. It was the home of the Uezu clan, an aristocratic family whose members served as village mayors for generations during the period of the Ryukyu Kingdom. The house was built in the 1750s. It is said to be the oldest remaining traditional house in Okinawa, and it has been designated a National Important Cultural Property.
  • Ruins of Gushikawa Castle

    "Ruins located in Nakandakari, Kumejima Town, Shimajiri County. It is not certain when this castle was built, but it is believed that the ""aji"" (ruler) of the region built it at the beginning of the 15th century. A platform surrounded on all sides by the sea and by a stone wall has been preserved. Archeological excavations have uncovered celadon and other artifacts that indicate trade with China. The castle has been designated a National Historic Monument."
