- A Japanese confectionary shop which has been in business since the Meiji period. “Jumbo mochi” specialty shop, the establishment only sells jumbo mochi. Consisting of bite sized balls of mochi (glutinous, pounded rice), jumbo mochi are lightly grilled before eating and covered in sauces such as sweet miso, zarame brown sugar, and kudzu. After the Satsuma Rebellion during the Meiji period, it is said these sweets were first created by a former guard of the inner garden of the Sengan-en garden. The 12 mochi plate, which comes garnished with pickles for cleansing the palate, is particularly popular. The shop’s wares are also available for takeout.

仙巌園-集成館寄ったあとに行きました。歩いても行ける距離ですが、タクシーでそのまま鹿児島駅まで行きました。 味は予想通り普通のみたらし団子でした。

Karukan is a famous confection of Kagoshima created on the recommendation of Shimazu Nariakira, the lord of the Satsuma domain at the time. Made from nothing more than natural yam, rice flour, and sugar, the confection is notable for a simple sweetness and soft texture that reflects Satsuma's spirit of simplicity and fortitude. Its characteristic flavor and dignified white appearance has remained unchanged. Some of the other popular products include karukan manju, which features karukan stuffed with adzuki bean paste, as well as sakura-sakura, which features gyuhi (soft rice cake) wrapped around white bean paste and topped with a salted cherry blossom.

Kagoshima Areas
Over 100 active volcanoes across Kagoshima make it one of the Japan's most exciting prefectures. The prefectural capital, Kagoshima city, looks out to one of the prefecture’s most spectacular volcanoes, Sakurajima, an island of its own that can be visited and seen close up or admired from afar, with the promise of breathtaking sunsets complete with frequent puffs of smoke and ash. Down the Satsuma Peninsula, the most southerly part of mainland Japan, waterfalls, sand onsen, and fascinating history await, while Kagoshima's abundance of satsuma imo (sweet potato) provide a wholesome snack as well as one of Japan's favourite drinks - shochu.
