The Amami Park is just a five-minute bus ride from the Amami Airport. This Amami Islands park is centered around the Tanaka Isson Museum, a Japanese artist, and introduces his works depicting the natural beauty and life of Amami. The park is also the home of the Amami no Sato exhibition center which displays the nature and village life of Amami Islands through scale model exhibits and videos. In the Nature and Culture Center, the Amami no Sato, one can enjoy the Ocean Path, the Island Path and the Forest Path exhibits, and the Amami Theater with high definition videos with surround sound acoustics. The Amami corner is set up as an introduction to the many islands while multiple events are held in the indoor event hall hosts multiple events and amphitheater hosts outdoor events.

Tanaka Isson, my favorite artist is probably Paul Gauguin of Japan. Art gallery in the park is the largest collection on Earth. Rare arts from the age of 8 as well as iconic fish & lobsters. Also...

This brown sugar manufacturer is located about a 10-minute drive from Amami Airport towards Naze City. It produces brown sugar exclusively with Amami Oshima sugar cane as well as sweets and processed foods made with local fruit. The attached cafe, Frandor Cafe, serves food made with seasonal ingredients such as brick oven pizzas and seasonal cakes as well as French toast made with pure brown sugar. Guests can enjoy views of the beautiful waters around Amami Oshima Island through the all-glass exterior wall on the side of the cafe that faces the ocean.

A vast, primeval mangrove located a 70-minute drive from Amami Airport where visitors can come in contact with nature and enjoy outdoor activities year-round. In 2001, the mangrove was registered as part of the Roadside Station Amami Oshima Sumiyo facility. The second largest mangrove in Japan, the area is a habitat for rare plants and animals, including the Ryukyu ayu, a fish which has followed a unique evolutionary path. Canoeing through the thick mangrove is a particularly popular activity here. There’s also an outdoor recreation and relaxation space and an observatory offering a sweeping view of the primeval mangrove.

We’ve got a guide who speaks excellent English! It was fun and interesting. Observatory is worth to walk up. We went there in winter but long sleeve t-shirts was enough. There are about 15 people in...

The distinctive exterior of this museum is modeled after a “nanbansen” one of the foreign European ships that first visited Japan. The museum displays a variety of ancient firearms, such as a Portuguese gun which made its way to Tanegashima in 1543 and examples of the first guns ever made in the country. The museum also has dioramas and videos presenting the history and culture of Tanegashima; stopping by the museum first before exploring the rest of the island will make your visit that much more interesting. A 10-minute walk from Nishinoomote Port.

While there is a lot of history about Tanegashima and the introduction of firearms to Japan, most information was in Japanese. They did have a small English brochure. The bulk of the exhibit...

This wooden residence is where Saigo Takamori lived for around three years when he was ordered to stay in Amami Oshima Island. It is now a private property managed by the son of his wife, Aigana, and is open to the public as a paid-entry museum. The residence has valuable items such as Saigo Takamori's personal history and private writings, and a stone monument to his wife, Aigana, on display. There is also another monument with the lettering from Katsu inscribed on it.

A restaurant which serves Keihan, a local Amami dish, located a one-minute walk from the “Yanyu Hisakura-mae” bus stop. Keihan consists of chicken, omelet strips, shiitake mushrooms, papaya pickles, and tankan citrus fruit rind served over piping hot rice and covered with a chicken bone broth. This dish, “fit for a feudal lord,” was originally created to serve to government officials from Satsuma. The restaurant raises its own chickens on its own farm, as well as its own eggs, papaya, and other ingredients. Customers can enjoy the rich flavor of chicken and broth covered rice.

A great place to eat local Keihan. 2 seating arrangements :Japanese low table or Western higher table. Friendly staff. Extra rice or soup is free. Highly recommend.

"This is where you can observe the precious nature of Amami Oshima up close. You can enjoy a leisurely stroll while observing the plants and animals native to Amami Oshima because of the promenade in the large garden. From the highest observatory ""Dragon Fort,"" you can get a beautiful view of Tatsugo Bay, and you can see from Kikai Island to Mt. Yuwan on clear days. "This shrine listed in the Engishiki Shrine Name Book stands on the western side of the Miyanoura River estuary. It enshrines Ippon Hoju Daigongen, the deity venerated by the traditional mountain worship religion. This shrine of high social standing is extremely revered as the tutelary shrine of the islanders of both Yakushima Island and Tanegashima Island. A number of items on the shrine's grounds including a pair of Deva king statues and the shrine's chozubachi (hand washing basin) have been designated as cultural properties of the Yakushima Town. The two characters that comprise the name ""Yaku"" have a connotation of ""ever-increasing divine salvation."" Consequently, the shrine is also called ""Sukui no Miya"" (shrine of salvation)."

A historic tourist center built in 1974 located a one-hour drive from Amami Airport. The building stands two stories above ground and also has a basement floor and contains exhibits and videos on the poisonous habu snake. Established to convey the dangers of this animal, here visitors can learn about the history and ecology of habu. In addition to watching videos of habu and mongooses fighting, the museum has real live habu on display as well as specimens of animals eaten by habu. The facility’s souvenir and gift shop carries things like habu skin wallets and keychains as well as habu health foods.

This home was the final residence of the Nihonga painter Isson Tanaka, who moved to Amami Oshima Island after being charmed by the nature of these southern islands when he was 50 years old. The joy of living in this new home, which he purportedly considered to be like a palace compared to the previous home he had long rented, is said to have rejuvenated his creative urges. His paintings in this period are best characterized by his boldly composed and detailed depictions of the island's subtropical plants and fish. He continued to create paintings inspired by the nature of the Amami Islands until he passed away in obscurity at the age of 69 in 1977. The anniversary of his death is still marked by members of the community.

The works clearly reflect the artists growth, newfound inspirations on Amami Oshima Island, and overall style development. The pieces are vivid and offer distinct insight to beauty of the islands...

A hidden inn located close to the “Ushidoko Koen” bus stop. Each of the inn’s four wooden cottages, surrounded by natural beauty and situated on the bank of the Shiratanigawa River, are filled with touches which speak of the owner’s care and taste. One of the inn’s biggest draws is that it enables guests to relax and feel like they are in their very own home while at the same time taking in the delights of Japan through a bath carved out of a 1,000 year old Yakushima cedar, a Goemon bath heated underneath by firewood, and a traditional irori sunken hearth. The inn overflows with hospitality, and elements like the handmade informational signs and picture scrolls, and a class provided by the inn in which you can make your very own chopsticks while experiencing the fragrance and age of long-lived Yakushima cedar, provide guests with a truly special stay.

The fresh mackerel sukiyaki (hotpot) is particularly popular. Tatami seating available.

The freshest fish Ive ever eaten which explains why there is often a line outside the restaurant. We got there early for dinner and were able to get a table right away.

Kagoshima Areas

around-area-map

Over 100 active volcanoes across Kagoshima make it one of the Japan's most exciting prefectures. The prefectural capital, Kagoshima city, looks out to one of the prefecture’s most spectacular volcanoes, Sakurajima, an island of its own that can be visited and seen close up or admired from afar, with the promise of breathtaking sunsets complete with frequent puffs of smoke and ash. Down the Satsuma Peninsula, the most southerly part of mainland Japan, waterfalls, sand onsen, and fascinating history await, while Kagoshima's abundance of satsuma imo (sweet potato) provide a wholesome snack as well as one of Japan's favourite drinks - shochu.
