- This beautiful former castle town area, a 10-minute walk from Usuki Station on the JR Nippo Main Line, consists of stone paved hill roads, samurai residences, and Buddhist temples. The Nioza Historical Road is paved with stone cut from tuff formed from the volcanic ash of Mt. Aso and is a continuous stretch of high stone walls and stately white-walled buildings with tile roofs. There is a free rest area in the remodeled former Shinkoji Temple, and from the second floor visitors can get a sweeping view of the area's scenery. The Usuki Takeyoi festival is held each year in early November, and during the event the stone-paved road is lined with some 20 thousand bamboo lanterns. In 1993, the area was selected for inclusion in a list of the country's 100 best urban scenery destinations.

Oita Areas
A trip to Oita is tantamount to a long soak in the Beppu baths. The mountainous, coastal prefecture of Oita is renowned for having more onsen than any other prefecture in Japan, most of which lie in the city of Beppu on the west coast of Kyushu, recognizable by its pungent sulphuric aroma and the clouds of steam that puff up across the hillside. Away from the Beppu hot springs await mountains, waterfalls, and temples, so don’t hesitate to explore Oita a little further.
