"This collection of over 60 Buddhist statues carved out of a tuff rock wall forms the core of the Usuki Stone Buddhas and is a five-minute drive from the Usuki Interchange on the Higashikyushu Expressway. The statues are believed to have been created from the late Heian period to the Kamakura period. One of the best stone Buddhist statue groups in Japan in terms of size, quantity, and carving skill, the group's statue of Vairocana in particular is considered a masterpiece. In 1995, this statue was the first such stone Buddhist statue in the country to be designated a National Treasure. Also known as the ""13 Furuzono Buddhas,"" other nearby stone Buddhist statue groups include the first and second Hoki Stone Buddhas clusters, and the Sannosan Stone Buddhas."

It is definitely worth visiting, or I rather say it is worth traveling to Kyushu to visit Usuki Stone Buddha. There are four different areas, you can see many statues of Buddha, which are engraved in...

"This museum, a 15-minute walk from Usuki Station on the JR Nippo Main Line, takes a deep look at the life and career of Yaeko Nogami, a writer who created such masterpieces as ""The Neptune"" and ""Hideyoshi and Rikyu."" The museum is housed in a remodeled part of the Kotegawa Sake Brewery building, which was the artist's childhood home and which stands in a part of Usuki where much old townscape can still be found. Inside, the museum displays a recreation of the study room Nogami used as a girl, as well as some 200 personal effects, including writing implements the author used right up until her passing; letters from famed novelist Natsume Soseki, who was her husband's teacher; and manuscripts written in Nogami's own hand. Oita Pref. Usukishi Usuki Niu Island 91-1
These castle ruins are approximately ten minutes on foot from JR Usuki Station in southern Usuki City. The castle was built by the Christian feudal lord Otomo Sorin in 1562 and was occupied by the Inaba clan until the feudal era system of land division was abolished in 1873. Today the site is a park, but the stone rampart, dry moat, and a turret remain, giving an idea of what it once looked like. It was also known as Niujima Castle as it was built on Niujima Island, and Turtle Castle because the island was thought to look like a turtle. It is also one of the prefecture's premier cherry blossom viewing spots and it gets packed with visitors in spring.

This beautiful former castle town area, a 10-minute walk from Usuki Station on the JR Nippo Main Line, consists of stone paved hill roads, samurai residences, and Buddhist temples. The Nioza Historical Road is paved with stone cut from tuff formed from the volcanic ash of Mt. Aso and is a continuous stretch of high stone walls and stately white-walled buildings with tile roofs. There is a free rest area in the remodeled former Shinkoji Temple, and from the second floor visitors can get a sweeping view of the area's scenery. The Usuki Takeyoi festival is held each year in early November, and during the event the stone-paved road is lined with some 20 thousand bamboo lanterns. In 1993, the area was selected for inclusion in a list of the country's 100 best urban scenery destinations.

This gallery, a 15-minute walk from Usuki Station on the JR Nippo Main Line, operates out of a remodeled kura storehouse built in 1868 at the end of the Edo period. Used as a storehouse by sake brewer Kuge Honten, it was reborn as a gallery in May 2000. When it was turned into a gallery, the exterior and interior walls were decorated with painted tiles in a traditional Portuguese art form called Azulejo by artist Rogerio Ribeiro. The blue tiles are beautifully set off by the storehouse' white walls and their imagery recalls the area's early Japanese Christian history. Today, the gallery is used for events such as photo exhibitions and mini concerts.

Oita Areas

around-area-map

A trip to Oita is tantamount to a long soak in the Beppu baths. The mountainous, coastal prefecture of Oita is renowned for having more onsen than any other prefecture in Japan, most of which lie in the city of Beppu on the west coast of Kyushu, recognizable by its pungent sulphuric aroma and the clouds of steam that puff up across the hillside. Away from the Beppu hot springs await mountains, waterfalls, and temples, so don’t hesitate to explore Oita a little further.
