  • Motosaru Takayama Beach

    This swimming beach, a 10-minute drive from the Kamae Interchange on the Higashikyushu Expressway, consists of a symmetrical stretch of coastline where a sandy beach and pebble beach meet. The Motosaru half, selected for inclusion in the Japan's 100 Best Beaches list, is a one-kilometer-long, 40-meter-wide, gently sloping sandy beach which boasts the cleanest ocean water in the prefecture. The adjoining Takayama half is a pebble beach whose bank blossoms with white spider lily flowers from June to early autumn, and red hibiscus flowers from July to November. The beach is replete with a full array of facilities, including parking, showers, and changing rooms.
  • Hatouzu Beach

    This swimming beach, a three-minute drive from the Kamae-Hatozu Interchange on the Higashikyushu Expressway, is located on the border between Oita Prefecture and Miyazaki Prefecture, and is the southernmost beach in Oita Prefecture. A sprawling stretch of beautiful, sandy beach and calm, shallow ocean, even small children can have fun swimming in safety here. The beach's white sands and pine trees also create a beautiful contrast, and it has been selected for inclusion in the Top 100 White Sand Beaches and Green Pine Groves of Japan list. Swimming season is from mid-July to the end of August. In addition to toilets and showers, there are camping sites which are free to use in the pine grove, and visitors can also auto camp here.
  • Zeai Beach

    This swimming beach, a 25-minute drive from the Kusumi Interchange on the Higashikyushu Expressway, is located in Zeai Park, a nature park consisting of sand beach as well as bungalows and an observatory. A sprawling stretch of white sands and clear ocean, the beach was selected for inclusion in the 88 Best Swimming Beaches in Japan list in 2001, and the 100 Most Comfortable Beaches in Japan list in 2006. The beach's tide pool, where you can see sea creatures by the shore, is also popular. There are walking paths in the area and the beach is also replete with changing rooms, toilets, and showers.

A trip to Oita is tantamount to a long soak in the Beppu baths. The mountainous, coastal prefecture of Oita is renowned for having more onsen than any other prefecture in Japan, most of which lie in the city of Beppu on the west coast of Kyushu, recognizable by its pungent sulphuric aroma and the clouds of steam that puff up across the hillside. Away from the Beppu hot springs await mountains, waterfalls, and temples, so don’t hesitate to explore Oita a little further.
