    A viewing platform at the top of Mt. Kagami, a mountain once visited by numerous poets in the Nara period (710–794) and much praised in the poems of the Man'yoshu (The Ten Thousand Leaves), Japan’s oldest poetry anthology. 283 meters above sea level, this popular photo spot offers a spectacular view of Nijinomatsubara and Karatsu Bay.     This is a group of seven sea caves which stand in a row along the coast of Karatsu City in Saga Prefecture. It is a scenic spot formed by the erosion of the basalt cliff face which reaches a height of 40 meters by the violent waves. If you board a pleasure boat, you can see the powerful rocks up close. In 1925, the caves were designated as National Natural Monuments as “the seven pots of Yakataishi”.

    Located along the Yobuko coast, this is Japan’s first restaurant in the sea. In the center is a huge fish preserve connected to the sea, creating an aquarium-like atmosphere. The underwater table and tatami-room seats allow one to watch the fish in close proximity, and in the tatami hall above one can look out over the Yobuko mountains and Yobuko Ohashi bridge in a preeminent location while tasting fish cuisine of unparalleled freshness. At the front they sell souvenirs including the famous squid steamed dumpling.

The 11.5-hectare area consists of 283 terraced rice fields of varying shapes and sizes built on slopes facing a cove. Visitors can enjoy such seasonal sights as the terraced rice fields filled with water and sun set over the ocean beyond. There are observatories in the area from which visitors can take in the fields and on long holidays the place bustles with tourists.

    A castle built on a hill by the first feudal lord Terasawa Shima-no-Kami Hirotaka between 1602 and 1608. The entrance to the west of Sannomaru was called Nishinomon. This facility is in that historic zone. It houses, curates, and exhibits cultural properties excavated from various sites around the city. You can also observe preservation and repair processes like the repainting of a traditional parade float that's a Tangible Important Cultural Property of Saga Prefecture.

    "The kiln is located in Uban Futsukura (姥の懐), a village in Karatsu, and is the home of Takashi Nakazato, who won the first prize for his ceramic sculpture ""Sogyo"" at the 10th Modern Japanese Ceramic Art Exhibition sponsored by the Asahi Shimbun in 1961, and the prize at the 1985 Selected Modern Ceramic Art Exhibition sponsored by the Ceramic Society of Japan, and now three generations of his family are producing pottery. The restaurant serves seafood from the Genkai Sea and dishes made with Yobuko's famous live squid, including squid ikizukuri and squid shumai steamed dumplings. In addition to set meals like an ikizukuri set meal, seafood rice bowls, and a kaiseki course meal featuring all manner of squid dishes, the establishment also offers reservation only course meals. In the adjoining Yobuko Kaishu Kodawari Kobo, visitors can watch squid shumai being made beyond a glass window and purchase some of these tasty dumplings to bring home.

    An exhibition hall and shop on the second floor of Furusato Hall Arpino next to JR Karatsu Station. Visitors can see a variety of pottery works in one place and purchase some as well. The hall offers a variety of dishes and containers perfect for everyday use, making this a great place to pick up a souvenir. The hall also presents how Karatsu ware is made through informational panels and other means. Pottery painting workshops available.
  • Hikiyama Exhibition Hall

    This exhibition hall displays the 14 hikiyama festival floats used in the Karatsu Kunchi Festival, a harvest festival held each year from November 2 to 4. Each of the floats was dedicated sometime between the late Edo period and Meiji period. They were made by wrapping wooden frames with hundreds of sheets of Japanese washi paper and then applying and re-applying various colors of lacquer. Bold in design and modeled after themes such as a samurai helmet, Chinese lion, and sea bream, even when looked at through a protective case one can feel their power.

    This tofu shop makes its tofu using high quality Kyushu soybeans. A small 10-seat restaurant adjoins the shop which opens four times a day at 8 a.m., 10 a.m., 12 p.m., and 2 p.m. in line with when fresh batches of tofu are made. The zaru-dofu (fresh creamy tofu served in a draining basket) is particularly exquisite; the best times to order it are either 8 a.m. when its fresh and warm or at 12 p.m. when the flavor has really set in. During the evening, the restaurant only serves a traditional kaiseki course meal.

Rich in kaolin (a type of clay), Saga became the homeland of Arita ware, a delicate, decorative porcelain that is now celebrated worldwide and can be discovered in the towns of Arita, Imari, and Karatsu.
