  • The ruins of Hagi Castle in Shizuki Park

    Hagi Castle (also known as Shizuki Castle) was built by Mori Terumoto in 1604. After the castle was demolished, Shizuki Park was built in part of what had previously been the Honmaru (central bailey) of the castle. Part of the castle’s stone wall and defensive ditch survive, and the site has been designated as a National Historic Site. Within the Park, there are many historic remains that remind visitors that a castle once stood here, including the ruins of the castle’s Tenshu-kaku (central tower) and the Hananoe teahouse (the Nashiba family teahouse), and the former Fukuhara Family Sho-in (Fukuhara Academy), etc. The remains of the Tenshu-kaku walls are illuminated at night, making a truly beautiful sight. Shizuki Park is a famous spot for viewing cherry-blossom, attracting many visitors during the cherry blossom season in spring. Within the park there is a single specimen of the Midori Yoshino variety of cherry tree, which has been designated by Yamaguchi Prefectural Government as a Prefectural Natural Monument; its beautiful white petals make this a very special tree.

    The Shizukiyama Shrine was built in 1878 within the ruins of the Honmaru (central bailey) of Hagi Castle by local volunteers. Formerly designated as a Prefectural Shrine, the Shizukiyama Shrine is dedicated to five deified members of the Mori family―Mori Motanari, Mori Takamoto, Mori Terumoto, Mori Takachika and Mori Motonori―and every member of the family that ruled the Hagi domain is commemorated at the Shrine down to the 12th generation. The Midori Yoshino variety of cherry tree that grows in the foothills nearby is a precious cherry tree variety that can only be seen in Hagi.

    A tasteful tea room located in Shizuki Park. This building was the 13th feudal lord Mori Takachika’s family villa Hanano-e court’s tea room called “Jizai-an”, which was originally located in Sannomaru but was dismantled and relocated here in approximately 1889. The building has been designated as a Tangible Cultural Property of Hagi City. It is said that Mori Takachika had lively debates and exchanged secret conferences on the pretence of gathering here with the vassals for tea ceremonies.

    This is Ito Hirobumi’s villa, who was central to the drafting of the Meiji Constitution and became the first Prime Minister. Ito Hirobumi’s former residence was a small house of about 95.9 meters squared which is a one-story house built with a thatched roof, while the villa was part of a vast villa built in Oimura, Tokyo in 1907; one part of which was dismantled and rebuilt here as it is. Volunteer guides are stationed at the villa, who can help you to learn more about the facilities.
  • Myojin Pond (Myojinike)

    The Myojin Pond is located on the east foot of Mt. Kasayama. It was created when a land bridge was formed by a sandbank between Mt. Kasayama and the mainland, and the body of water remaining after the split was filled and became Myojin Pond. It consists of three parts, “oike” (large pond), “nakano-ike” (middle pond) and the “okuno-ike” (inner pond), and as it is connected with the open sea through the gap between the mass of lava rock, you can see the tide as it rises and falls. The lake was called “Benten lake” as Benzaiten (the god of wealth) was enshrined on the northern side of the pond, and it was also called “the teahouse lake” as the feudal lord’s tea room was also built in this picturesque place.

    Senshunraku Jozan is a ceramics workshop which has Kaneko Nobuhiko, a ceramist who has won many awards including the Yamaguchi Prefecture Cultural Achievement Award, working there; here, visitors can experience the beauty of Hagi-ware, a ceramic tradition with a history going back more than 400 years. Besides opportunities to view the potters at work and have a guided tour of the bank kiln, there is also a gallery showcasing the workshop’s creations and a large gift shop. In the experiential classroom, visitors can enjoy learning how to paint Hagi-ware, how to shape pots by hand, etc. Meals can be arranged for larger groups of visitors.

    Hotoritei is a cafe where visitors can drink tea or enjoy a meal surrounded by a beautiful traditional Japanese rock garden. The cafe is situated in an old mansion within extensive grounds (covering approximately 2,640 square meters), creating an atmosphere that is not only luxurious and elegant but also calm and relaxing. The superb food served at Hotoritei makes extensive use of fresh local ingredients from Yamaguchi Prefecture, including fish caught nearby off the coast of Hagi.

    雰囲気は申し分なし。 ランチが物足りなかったので、デザートを求めてお茶しに来ました。 かき氷を食べましたが、なかなかの食べ応え。 周りで食されているランチもなかなか美味しそうでしたので、次はランチで来たいと思いました。

    Hagi Shinkai is a restaurant next to Hagi Bridge specializing in Fugu (Pufferfish) and fresh fish from the restaurant’s own fish-tanks; the restaurant building, which resembles a white lighthouse, is very distinctive. Inside, the restaurant has the finest fish-tanks in Yamaguchi Prefecture, with squid, stonefish, flounder and other local fish species swimming around vigorously. Hagi Shinkai is famous for its squid dishes (made using squid from the restaurant’s own tanks), which have an exquisite flavor that permeates every mouthful; for these dishes, the squid is ultra-fresh, not being taken out of the tank until immediately before the dish is prepared. The Fugu (Pufferfish) set meal, which is available in the winter months, and the flounder set meal available in the summer months, need to be booked in advance.

    Fair warning the staff does not speak English nor do they have an English menu. It does help to know some Japanese phrases or at least be quick with google translate. The staff is fantastic and...

Shizuki, a nationally-designated Natural Monument that towers over the peninsula, and many islands including offshore Oshima Island and Ainoshima Island from the sandy beach, and it is also famous as a spot with magnificent views. In addition, Kikugahama Beach was also called ""Abu no Matsubara"" in the ""Kin'yo Wakushu"" (a Japanese imperial anthology). There are beach houses and many street vendors during the beach season, making it suitable for families spending time on the beach."

    This 0.5 kilometer road leads from Haruwaka-cho to Minami Furuhagi-machi. It was named after the fact that it passes by the Kikuya Family manor, once used as accommodations by traveling inspectors of the Tokugawa Bakufu and given over as troop headquarters. The street walls are lined with tessellated patterns, preserving the original castle town atmosphere for the current day. The street also runs by the birthplaces of Shinsaku Takasugi, and Giichi Tanaka.

Starting from the Hagi Castle ruins adjacent Shigetsu Bridge, the 40-minute-round-trip cruise offers a view of Tokiwa Island, the Hashimoto River, the samurai houses of the Horiuchi and Heian Koden districts. This cruise offers a glimpse of sights you can't usually see from land, making it quite popular.

    Hagi Mikan no Takenaka is a citrus fruit store located in the grounds of Shoin Shrine in Hagi City, Yamaguchi Prefecture, and run by three generations of citrus fruit farmers in Hagi. From cultivating organic natsumikans to processing and selling them, the store handles a wide range of products from natural fruit to confectionery. A popular product is their Kannoshizuku which is made by filling a hollowed out natsumikan with fruit juice jelly. Their Natsumikan no Maruzuke filled with adzuki-bean jelly is also very popular. The shop also sells citrus juices and sorbets.

    The birthplace of Kido Takayoshi, known as one of “the three contributors to the Meiji Restoration along with Saigo Takamori and Okubo Toshimichi, located in Gofuku Town, Hagi City, Yamaguchi Prefecture. Takayoshi was adopted by the Katsura family at the age of seven, but he grew up at the home of his real father, Wada Masakage, a physician of the Hagi clan. The house is a wooden two-story building with a tiled roof and separate entrances for patients and visitors which would have been typical of an Edo period physician’s house. Writings and photos of Kido Takayoshi’s childhood are displayed in the house. Visitors can also see his study room and the room in which he was born.

    Kotokoto is a cafe and gallery located in Gofuku Town, Hagi City, Yamaguchi Prefecture and run from an historic old town house. Inside is a relaxing space decorated in an old fashioned Japanese style with Nordic chairs. Guests can enjoy a cafe menu such as marmalade toast with lots of homemade marmalade while gazing over the serene inner garden. For lunch, the curry made with vegetables from Hagi is also popular. The gallery sells Hagi-yaki pottery, towels and accessories among other things.

    A long established natsumikan (summer orange) confectionery store in Kumagaya Town, Hagi City, Yamaguchi Prefecture, founded in 1858 at the end of the Edo period. Mitsukuni is said to be the originator of sweets made with natsumikan, a renowned Hagi product. Each product is carefully handmade while preserving the recipe which has been handed down over the generations. Their signature product is the natsumikan maruzuke, a hollowed out natsumikan filled with white bean paste. The hollowed out skin is simmered in syrup for two nights and the whole process to make these famous sweets from Hagi takes five days.

The store sells superb Kamaboko made by skilled artisans using fresh, carefully-selected Eso (lizardfish). Product items include “High-quality Handmade Charcoal-grilled Kamaboko Chukobei” cooked using charcoal produced locally in Hagi, as well as Yuzumaki (lemon rolls), Gobomaki, Smoked Kamaboko, and assortments of different Kamaboko products.
