  • Kofun no Oka Kososhi Park
    Leisure / Hobbies
    Shimane Matsue-shi Kososhi 562-1
This historical site is located in the hilly area on the north shore of Lake Shinji. It displays rectangular-shaped kofun ancient tombs said to have been built at the end of the fifth century, and replicas of some ironware and Sue pottery found inside the tombs. The tombs discovered during the construction of a residential area in 1985 had many head-sized roofing stones stuck on the top and sides, and it is said that those with a lot of power were buried there because the two-tiered tombs had a vast number of cylindrical haniwa clay images arranged on top. Currently, there is an open-air exhibition plaza introducing the history of Lake Shinji and Lake Nakaumi and a covered outdoor stage, and various events such as outdoor learning activities and lectures are held.

"This lakeside park is located in front of Matsue Lake Shinji Onsen. In the park located along the north shore of Lake Shinji, there is a statue of ""Hoichi the Earless,"" written by the great writer of the Meiji period Yakumo Koizumi, monument with a haiku by Seishi Yamaguchi from Kyoto Prefecture, and monument inscribed with the poem ""Shirauo"" (white fish) by Shungetu Ikuta from the Taisho period (1912-1926). From the park with its green grass and pine forest, it is possible to look out over all of Lake Shinji. There is a promenade in the park, and you can spend a relaxing time while experience the atmosphere of Matsue, the city of water, loved by many writers."

"This water park stretches out in front of the Shimane Art Museum. The lawn-centered park is widely known as a spot to watch the sunset over Lake Shinji, which was selected as one of the Japan Sunset Best 100. The setting sun, the museum's modern architectural style and the museum's outdoor art gallery are the best examples of Matsue's spectacular scenery. At dusk, the whole area is enveloped in a relaxing atmosphere. You can find ""Lake Shinji rabbits"" in the park, and it is said to bring you happiness if you gently touch the second rabbit from the lake."

This cafe and gallery is adjacent to Matsue Shinjiko-Onsen Station on the Ichibata Electric Railway. The restaurant has a sense of openness and is bright and offers coffee, tea, Chinese herbal curry and cold soba buckwheat noodles. Their zenzai (red bean soup) made with red beans from Izumo and rice cakes from Unnan has a gentle sweetness. It is perfect when taking a break from strolling in the hot spring town because of the amount. The Chinese herbal curry uses Shussai ginger, a brand with a more than 400 year-history, and is made with multigrain rice, which is considered healthy. The exhibition space displays cute Japanese everyday items and accessories. There are many tourists who stop by to purchase souvenirs after eating.

  • Tawayama Ruins Park
    Leisure / Hobbies
    Shimane Matsue-shi Noshiracho 32-3
"This historic landmark park is adjacent to Matsue City Hospital. The wide-open space houses recreated dugout shelters and pit-dwellings. Archaeologists discovered the remains of over 20 shelters in this area, called ""Matsue's Navel."" A triple-trench goes around the peak of the hill, and in the center, there are raised-floor houses with nine pillars. The other buildings lined up around the outside of the dried moat have a very unusual design, and create a unique sight for Japan. Experts believe they date back to the early- to middle late-Yayoi period. There are well-maintained trails along the ruins, and you can easily climb to the peak for a view of Lake Shinji and Matsue city."

This health promotion facility is in Yakumo Town, surrounded by the rural Satoyama landscape. As Matsue's leading Kurhaus facility, it has a pool, spa, training gym, and sports studio. • Gohonmatsu Park
    Leisure / Hobbies
    Shimane Matsue-shi Mihonosekicho Mihonoseki
This park is on a moderately high 100-130 meter above sea level park. The name comes from five pine trees that were once used as landmarks for ships. The current pines are the third generation of trees here. One of the trees was cut down by order of the domain lord, and this became the basis for the folk song Seki no Gohonmatsu (The barrier of five pine trees). There is a region planted with about 5,000 azaleas, making this one of the prefecture's leading such spots. The blooming season most years is from late April through early May. The azaleas in full bloom against the backdrop of Miho bay to the south, Yumigahama beach, and Nakaumi lake is a sight to behold.

Shimane Areas

around-area-map

What Shimane prefecture lacks in size and population, it makes up for in scenery and ancient mythology. Izumo-taisha, in the middle of the prefecture, is said to be Japan’s oldest Shinto shrine, where stories that delve into the creation of the Japanese race have been passed down over centuries. The 180 Oki Islands, a 40-minute ferry ride north of Sakaiminato, offer an undiscovered paradise well off the beaten track.
