    The general title for a four kilometer stretch of river comprised of numerous waterfalls. The area has been selected for numerous lists of scenic locations, including the Heisei 100 Famous Waterfalls, 100 Select Walking Trails, and Japan’s 100 Best Waterfall Scenery lists. Among the many waterfalls, the Akame Gobaku five falls are particularly impressive. The falls have been seen as a sacred site in traditional mountain worship since ancient times and En no Gyoja, famed mystic and founder of Shugendo asceticism, trained here. It is said that En no Gyoja met the Wisdom King Acala riding a red-eyed bull when training here, hence the area’s name of Akame (“Red Eye”). A statue of red-eyed bull is positioned along the walking trail, and it is said that rubbing them brings good luck.

  • Rokujuppiro Falls

    Rokujuppiro Falls is located in the park of the same name in Taki County, Mie Prefecture. This waterfall, which falls into Minogatani Valley along the shore of the lake formed by the Miyakawa Dam, was discovered during the Muromachi Period (1334-1615). When the drop of the falls was measured by dropping a rope in 1541, it was discovered to be 60 hiro (a hiro was a measurement of length equivalent to two outstretched hands), so it was named Rokujuppiro. The natural environment surrounding the falls is beautiful in every season, and scenic trails have been laid out so that visitors can easily walk around in the lovely scenery. On clear days, one can sometimes see rainbows in the falls.

  • Genshi-no-Fudotaki, Kisei Kasagi Ravine

    This ravine is located in Saki, Taiki Town, Watarai County, Mie Prefecture. Situated along the Kasagi River, here visitors can enjoy stunning scenery such as Kasagi-Fudo Waterfall, which consists of a larger and a smaller waterfall; interwoven with fall foliage, rhododendrons, and other seasonal natural beauty. There's also the adjoining Momiji Chaya rest house, and a barbecue ground.

Spread across the eastern side of the Kii Peninsula, Mie prefecture boasts hundreds of kilometers of pretty coastline comprising the oyster-rich Toba city and Shima National Park all the way down to Kumano, a city that marks the beginning of part of the Kumano Kodo pilgrimage, which runs into neighboring Wakayama prefecture. However, Mie is best known for the Ise Jingu Shinto shrine inland, one of the oldest and largest shrines in the country.
