Japanese Confectionery Spots in Hamamatsu / Lake Hamana Area

  • Ugetsuen
    Gourmet / Alcohol
    Shizuoka Kosai-shi Araicho Arai 1293
A traditional Japanese confectionary located a ten-minute walk from Araimachi Station, on the right side of National Route 301 while proceeding west from the Araimachi-ekimae Intersection. The Arai Sekisho (checkpoint on the Edo Period Tokaido Road) is nearby, and Ugetsuen is an attractive stop-off point during sightseeing in the area. Ugetsuen's most famous product Uzumaki, which won the Honorary Gold Award at the National Confectionery Exposition, is a simple confection made from brown sugar, wheat flour and baking powder. Even people who taste it for the first time say that it makes them feel strangely nostalgic. Another variety of Uzumaki is filled with bean jam. The shop also sells a wide variety of seasonally limited treats, such as Kashiwa Mochi (rice cake wrapped in an oak leaf). These often sell out, so pre-ordering is advised.
  • Ganyuudou (Sodeshigamori Store)
    Gourmet / Alcohol
    Shizuoka Hamamatsu-shi Chuo-ku Kodachicho 136-10
This Japanese confectionary shop is a five-minute walk from Funakoshi Park. Since it was established in the early Meiji period, the shop has continued to make old-fashioned Japanese confections using traditional techniques. Making its products by hand as much as possible, the shop also avoids the use of additives and preservatives whenever feasible, and is famed for its confections which are safe and healthy to eat for both adults and children. The shop's high-grade namagashi fresh Japanese confections, crafted utilizing techniques passed down through the generations and with uncompromisingly high-quality fillings, have the refined, highly stylish look only a longstanding establishment like this can provide. In addition to a snack to enjoy yourself, the shop's products also make perfect little gifts. The shop's flavorful confections can be enjoyed along with a cup of tea in the cafe space inside.

    Shizuoka Hamamatsu-shi Hamana-ku Mikkabicho Shimona 83-1
"A long-standing Japanese and western-style confectioner that first opened in 1885. Located at the foot of Onanomine Peak, which was mentioned in the Manyoshu collection of poetry, they make and sell traditional Japanese sweets and seasonal western treats. Their Jinsaku Manju is a traditional sweet that's been beloved since the shop's founding, made by wrapping a chunky red bean paste made with red beans directly purchased from Nakayabu Farm in Obihiro, Hokkaido, in a soft, egg-flavored, dough. Also popular is their Mikan Orange Monaka filled wafer cake, made with specially chosen Mikkabi Mikan Oranges and Oumi Habutae Mochi Rice Flour. The shop is also known for their ""Unagi no Hamanako Senbei,"" a blend of pure domestic Uruchi Rice and Hamamatsu's specialty Unagi Rice fried in rice-bran oil until golden and crispy."

Shizuoka Areas

around-area-map

With the giant Pacific Ocean to the south and the great Mount Fuji to the north, Shizuoka prefecture is blessed with some of the best views the country has to offer. The white sand beaches of the Izu Peninsula are a rare find on mainland Japan, neighbored by beautiful cliffs, tumbling hills, and natural hot springs. As Japan’s largest producer of green tea, the age-old tradition of tea drinking is ubiquitous in Shizuoka, from the miles of tea fields to the old tea houses hosting traditional tea ceremonies.
