This is one of the old post towns on the historic Nakasendo highway in which old scenery from the Edo period still remains. The cobblestone path along the hill features various buildings including restaurants and inns that evoke the days of old, giving it a very nostalgic atmosphere. Known as the birthplace of literary master Toson Shimazaki, various facilities connected to Shimazaki remain including the Toson Memorial Museum that is built on the remains of the headquarters of the Shimazaki family.

"A retro townscape of merchant houses and warehouses built between the early Meiji and Showa eras, the 400-meter-long area is dotted with Mino ware stores, galleries, cafes, etc. It was created in an effort to incorporate the free and innovative ideas of Oribe Furuta, a warlord from Gifu Prefecture and a renowned tea master, into modern town development. The ""Ceramic City Creation Hall,"" located in the center of the town, offers a wide variety of ceramics, from traditional Mino ware to works by young ceramic artists."

  • Maruyama Dam

    Kuzu-gun, Gifu Prefecture
A dam built along the Kisogawa River, a part of the Kisogawa River System. Approximately 100 meters tall, this concrete dam serves multiple purposes: flood control, power generation, and general irrigation. Construction of the dam was started before WWII and was completed in 1955. There is an exhibit room in the dam’s management office which displays pictures of the dam and how it looked during construction. With an advance reservation, you can participate in a tour of the dam’s control room and inspection passages. The free “dam card” collector cards issued by the dam are quietly popular.

The 45th post town on the Nakasendo Highway, it retains its atmosphere from the Edo period (1603-1868). A town that once flourished as the foremost commercial town in the Tono region, you can feel its vibrancy from that time. Behind the Nakasendo Historical Museum is the Wakihonjin, and the world beyond its gates is a must-see. There are many tourists who take commemorative photos here because the space between the storehouse and the upper level is open to the public. The well installed at Honjin Square is a popular spot because it can still pull water.
