  • Miboro Dam
    Travel / Tourism
    Gifu Pref. Onogunshirakawamura Maki
A hydroelectric dam holding back Miboro Lake pooling on the east side of Hideridake. 131 meters tall, it is the largest rockfill dam in Japan, and the amount of water stored in this massive structure’s reservoir is also the second greatest in the country. The emerald green waters of the dam lake reflect the surrounding plants and trees, creating a particularly beautiful contrast in autumn when the fall foliage is at its peak. This beautiful site has also been selected as one of the 33 best locations for viewing fall foliage in the Hida-Mino area. Another area highlight is a cherry tree over 400 years old called the Shokawa-sakura (designated a National Natural Monument) growing on the bank of Miboro Lake. The tree would have been submerged by the lake with the building of the dam, but instead was moved to its current location in a massive undertaking detailed in an episode of the popular NHK documentary series “Project X.”
