This is one of the old post towns on the historic Nakasendo highway in which old scenery from the Edo period still remains. The cobblestone path along the hill features various buildings including restaurants and inns that evoke the days of old, giving it a very nostalgic atmosphere. Known as the birthplace of literary master Toson Shimazaki, various facilities connected to Shimazaki remain including the Toson Memorial Museum that is built on the remains of the headquarters of the Shimazaki family.

"A retro townscape of merchant houses and warehouses built between the early Meiji and Showa eras, the 400-meter-long area is dotted with Mino ware stores, galleries, cafes, etc. It was created in an effort to incorporate the free and innovative ideas of Oribe Furuta, a warlord from Gifu Prefecture and a renowned tea master, into modern town development. The ""Ceramic City Creation Hall,"" located in the center of the town, offers a wide variety of ceramics, from traditional Mino ware to works by young ceramic artists."

A park at the upstream of the Atanodani River. It's close to Gero Onsen, one of Japan's top three hot spring towns. The park's name comes from a folk song by the poet Ujo Noguchi who visited the area in the early Showa period. The Atanodani River flows from the mountains around Gero Onsen right through downtown. The promenade along the river is great for a walk after your bath while taking in the natural surroundings. You can swim in the river in summer to add another layer of fun to your time in the hot spring town.

An old canal located a five minute drive from the Gujo-Hachiman Interchange on the Tokai-Hokuriku Expressway. The Gujo-Hachiman area is known for having some of the cleanest water in the country and is dotted with scenic waterways. This canal area is a pocket park which serves as a symbol of the water-rich Gujo-Hachiman area. Due to the many art museums along its length, the canal area is also known as “Art Museum Street.” The area’s stone paved path with the canal’s waters flowing along its side; rows of willows; and large, elegant Japanese homes are a breath of fresh air in the middle of the city.

A tour of the prefecture’s traditional architecture will take you from the mountain-enveloped wooden streets of Takayama to the mountain village of Shirakawago, where visitors can explore 250-year-old thatched roofed houses known as gassho-zukuri.
