  • Shizuka no Sakura Park

    This renowned destination for cherry blossom viewing is connected to the legend of the lady Shizuka Gozen. A cherry tree on the grounds believed to be around 800 years old is said to have grown from a cane Shizuka Gozen stuck in the ground here before she died, unable to reunite with her lover the samurai Minamoto no Yoshitsune. The park's cherry trees bloom from late May to early June; dog cherries, a variety with lovely five millimeter blossoms similar to plum blossoms, are the first to bloom. Visitors can take in the beautiful cherry trees and surrounding rural landscape while pondering Lady Shizuka's sad tale.

    A park situated partway up Mt. Higashi overlooking Omachi City. A renowned destination for cherry blossom viewing, the park's trees come into bloom from mid- to late April. The Northern Japan Alps stand solemnly beyond the park, and when the cherries are blooming snow still caps their peaks, further enhancing the scenic beauty. In addition, the avenue of cherry trees in the Omachi Onsenkyo hot spring village is decorated with paper lanterns from April 14 to May 6, so be sure to stroll this picturesque area before or after going flower viewing in the park.

The farm was one of the first places in Japan to begin growing blueberries on its vast, 10,000 square meter site, having now cultivated the tasty berries for close to 30 years. There's also a shop operated directly by the farm where you can purchase its blueberries to take home and give as a souvenir or gift.

    This is a gallery on Nakamachi Street in Nagano Prefecture’s Matsumoto City, an area full of storehouses with thick earthen walls distinctive for their black namako (raised plaster stripes) on a white background. Based on the concept of “enjoy and live with art,” it displays and sells various artists’ arts and crafts. The interior with its simple construction and white color scheme is a space like that of a studio with a harmonious balance of old and new items. They carry a large number of miscellaneous goods that indicate the energy of the young artists who crafted them, and the gallery also host events on an irregular schedule.
  • Hakuba Goryu Alpine Plants Botanical Garden

    This botanical garden at the Hakuba Goryu Snow Resort Alps-Daira lies at an altitude of 1,515 meters. From June to October there are over 300 varieties of two million alpine plants in beautiful bloom. It is possible to reach the garden by gondola and one can enjoy a meal and trekking too.
  • Happo-One Shizen-Kenkyu-ro (nature study path)

    This is a trekking course in Happo-One stretching out from Mt. Karamatsu of the Northern Alps Hakuba Mountain Range. Taking a gondola and two lifts to Happo Pond Sanso, it’s an approximate 90-minute course on to Happo Pond. Called the treasury of alpine plants, rare alpine plants endemic to the area grow here. In the summer one can appreciate a variety of flowers around Happo Pond and Kurohishidaira. It is a scenic course looking onto the three Shirouma mountains, and if the weather is good one can see a wide sea of clouds and the mystical sight of mountains reflected in Happo Pond. The starting point is gondola lift Happo Station.

    A gallery standing in an area filled with holiday homes in Hotakaariake, Azumino City, Nagano Prefecture. Surrounded by conifers, the location is rich in natural beauty. Focusing on arts and crafts pieces, each month a different special exhibition is held, and the gallery boasts six exhibition rooms. The items on display are also for sale, and include bowls, accessories, and knickknacks crafted one at a time by artisans. There is also a café space in the back. Different coffees and teas are selected to go with the current exhibition.
  • Azumino Municipal Museum of Modern Art, TOYOSHINA

    This art museum is located near the Azumino City Hall Toyoshina office. It features approximately 2,000 of painter Yoshihei Miya’s works, some of which inspired Mori Ogai’s novels. There are also about 200 works by Hiroatsu Takata, a giant of Japanese modern sculpture, and about 170 sketches by Kuni Kobayashi. The regular exhibitions aim to showcase the artists’ entire careers. There’s also a free garden modeled after a medieval monastery.
  • Chikuni no Sho Museum

    This is a historical archive in Kita-azumi County in Nagano Prefecture that communicates the history of the Chikuni Kaido road. Also called the Salt Road, it was used to transport goods from the Sea of Japan to Matsumoto in Nagano Prefecture and this archive was built on the remains of a guard house built at an important point along the way. An original private house has been relocated from a Chikuni settlement and rebuilt and visitors can see the way everyday life was at that time. There is also a Chikuni Bansho guard house and a Shiokura salt store. It is around one and a half hours from Azumino Interchange on the Nagano Expressway.

    This managed fishing place is situated in an amazing location in the middle of abundant nature at the foot of the majestic Northern Japan Alps. Facilities include a dedicated fly and lure pond (rod rentals not available), and a bait fishing pond (rental rods available). The facility's privately farmed fish are nice and big and also put up a good fight. In addition, customers can barbecue and eat the fish they catch in the bait pond over a charcoal fire in the facility's outdoor barbecue area. (available from late April to the end of October).

    A ceramics class studio located in Hotaka, Azumino City. The studio was opened in 1983 to promote ceramic arts in the area. The studio has a gallery with a standing exhibition of 70 pieces of ancient folk pottery as well as a classroom where people can learn and experience the various processes involved in pottery making, and visitors can come in contact with ceramics here in a variety of ways.
  • Salt Road, Chikuni Course
