  • Okamoto Shrine -Otaki Shrine

    Fukui Echizen-shi Otakicho 13-1
    A shrine in Otaki-cho, Echizen City. The inner shrine is located at the top of Mt. Gongen with another shrine in the village in the foothills. This is the only shrine in Japan that enshrines Kawakami Gozen, the god of paper making, who was said to have brought the technique of papermaking to the area 1500 years ago. The main shrine building and front shrine building of the village shrine are examples of late Edo period architecture and have been designated Important Cultural Properties of Japan.
  • Ryusogataki Waterfall

    Ryusogataki Waterfall is located in Ikeda Town, Imadate County, Fukui Prefecture and has a height of about 60 meters. It has been chosen as one of Japan’s Top 100 Waterfalls. The sight of water crashing down the rock face is nothing short of spectacular. The fresh verdure in spring, and the beautifully colored leaves and natural scenery of the ravine in autumn are beautiful sights to behold. And in the summer, people flock to this popular tourist spot in search of a cool respite from the scorching summer heat. The sheer height and power of the waterfall is enough to overwhelm anyone as they descend the stairs down to the bottom of the falls. Legend has it that a dragon, who lived in the water, used to climb the falls to fly high into the sky, and also long ago a priest named Ryuso performed ascetic practices here by carving images of deities and of the Buddha. Entry is not allowed to the waterfall during the winter because of snow.

    One of the Echizen Coast’s most notable sights, this large tunnel-like rock formation was created by eons of erosion by the wind and the waves. The rock formation, famous for being one of the best places to experience the natural beauty of the Echizen Coast, makes it appear as if the cliff is jutting out into the ocean. A promenade has been built nearby, allowing visitors to get a close look at the formation.
  • Cape Echizen

    This cape, selected as one of Japan’s top 100 places to watch the sunset, is located in the northernmost part of Echizen Town. The scenic area features many reefs created by marine abrasion. Some of its most famous sites include the kochomon (a natural rock tunnel) and torikusoiwa (a massive 100-meter tall cliff). The observation deck has a great view of Echizen Suisen Land and the Sea of Japan. Sunsets at the cape are an especially stunning.

    A museum in Ozowara, Echizen, Nyu. In addition to the museum, which shows off the charms of Echizen pottery through their collection on display, they also have a tea room and garden on the premises. They also offer pottery classes where you can experience electric pottery wheels and hand throwing as well as ceramic painting.

    The museum was newly established in 2017 and is located on the grounds of the Echizen Pottery Village, introducing Echizen pottery from the Heian period to the modern age. The site also houses the former Mizuno Family Residence, a reconstructed old private house in Fukui, and two authentic tea rooms, Tenshindo and Tenshin'an.

  • Satoshi Kako Furusato Picture Book Museum

    Fukui Echizen-shi Takase 1-14-7
    Born in Fukui Prefecture in 1926, picture book author Satoshi Kako graduated from the Faculty of Engineering at the University of Tokyo and worked for a chemical manufacturer while engaging in activities for children. He went on to produce many more works and established himself as a popular picture book author. His works are still read to this day, and three-dimensional models of the characters from his works line the walls of the Picture Book Museum.
  • Jofukuji Temple Garden

    A garden on the grounds of Jofukuji Temple in Gobuichi-cho, Echizen City. The garden is a Japanese rock garden and uses the natural scenery of the Hino Mountain Range in its design. It was created after the temple was moved to its current location in 1624. Serving as an example of mid Edo period landscaping techniques surviving into the modern era it has been designated as a national place of scenic beauty.
  • Ryusenji Temple

    A temple in Fukakusa 1-Chome, Echizen City. It was founded by the monk Tsugen Jakurei in 1368. It was the family temple for Honda Tomimasa, chief retainer of the Fukui Domain, and is still home to the family mausoleum. The grounds were the site of an ancient temple now called the Fukakusa Haiji Temple and relics have been excavated dating back to the Hakuho period (late 7th century CE).

    A famous cherry tree in Ikeizumi-cho, Echizen City. The large Edohigan (double weeping rosebud) cherry tree is over 140 years old and is planted on the grounds of the Echizen City Ajimano Elementary School. The tree is illuminated at night when in bloom for evening flower viewings. It has been designated a Natural Monument of the city. Being located on school grounds there are restrictions for visiting including not being able to visit during class hours.

    A tourist farm in Nakayama-cho, Echizen City. The farm grows cherries and grapes and from early to late June you can enjoy picking cherries while from early August to mid-October you can enjoy picking grapes. The farm also has an ownership system for cherry trees.

    A hands-on learning center in Betsuin-cho, Echizen City. Along with the Mori-no-Ie (Forest House), which is equipped with lodging facilities, a dining hall, and bathrooms, there are also bungalows, a barbecue house, a lawn area, and the multipurpose Hakkakudo Hall with included sunken hearths. They offer a variety of experiences including handicrafts such as woodworking and flower pressing, pizza making in stone ovens, stargazing, and walk rallies (reservation required).
  • Mizumadani Falls

    A river valley in the Imadate region of Echizen City. It surrounds the Gankutsudani River, a tributary of the Mizuma River, and is said to be the birthplace of Sasaki Kojiro, a master swordsman from the early Edo period. There are five waterfalls and legend states that Kojiro invented his secret Tsubame-Gaeshi (Turning Swallow) sword technique at Yanagi Falls.

    A museum located within the Manyo-no-Sato Ajimano Botanical Garden in Yokawa-cho, Echizen City. Centering around the concept of Romance and Love Poetry in the Manyoshu collection of poetry they have exhibits related to the different poems, especially that of poem 63 sent by Nakatomi-no-Yakamori, who had been swept away to Ajimano, to Sanonootogami-no-Otome who remained in Kyoto. In the park you can view plants related to the Manyoshu poems.
