Fukui Pref. Fukuishi Houei 3-12-1

This museum, which has a wealth of collections, including the Fukui City Shungaku Commemorative Collection, relating to the Fukui feudal domain and the Echizen Matsudaira Family, has a lot to see such as permanent exhibit rooms divided into 4 themes from pre-historic times up to the post-war recovery period as well as the Matsudaira Historical Records Room. Special exhibitions are also recommended as visitors can learn about the history of Japan and Asia while focusing on local history.

A small museum, but with many interesting exhibits, such as ancient burial tombs, and old swords and armour, but unfortunately there is no English explanation for the exhibits. Found the Japanese...

The Fukui Prefectural Museum of Cultural History is a museum in Fukui City, Fukui Prefecture that is dedicated to the history and industrial heritage of the Fukui region. The authentic artifacts on display and the section dedicated to the period from the mid-1950s through to the early 1970s are of particular interest. In the “Life in the Showa Period” corner, which recreates life in both rural communities and towns in that era, there is plenty to inspire nostalgia among visitors who remember those times, including a reconstruction of a traditional farmhouse and of a Dagashiya (traditional Japanese sweet shop). The lighting, sound effects and other aspects of the displays are changed with the seasons, further enhancing the experience for visitors to the Museum. The Museum is around 10 minutes’ drive from JR Fukui Station.

Located in Keya, Fukui City, Fukui Prefecture, this old shrine is beloved by locals as “Kurotatsu-san.” Said to have been built in Kurotatsu Town as a water deity for guarding Kuzuryu River, it receives adoration as one of Japan’s old four Daimyojin. It’s believed to be useful for warding off bad fortune, improving vitality, pregnancy, safe birth, and success in business. Recently, it’s popular as a power spot. The precincts feature many spots for improving fortune, like the “gankake ishi” or the “kounno nadeishi.”

越前藩の藩祖松平秀康が松平家の祈願所としたことからか神紋は三葉葵。名前からも分かる通り水を司る神社。駐車場は狭くて急な坂を上ったところに数台分がある。こじんまりとした神社で地元の方が多く参拝されているようだ。御朱印は見開きで、ぎょろっと目をむく竜がいる。三葉葵の箔押しがあってなかなか面白い。

"This art museum is located inside Geba Central Park in Geba 3-Chome, Fukui City. It features a collection of works by the sculptor Hiroatsu Takata, who grew up in Fukui. With a deep faith and history spanning over 1,500 years since its founding, the Asuwa-jinja Shrine—named for the ancestor deity of Echizen—venerates Emperor Keitai as the main deity, with other deities worshipped here as well. On the grounds you’ll find takao maples and weeping cherry trees which were designated as Natural Monuments in 1970. They are best viewed in mid November and around April 10th respectively, when many visitors enjoy them.

引き続き散歩です。足羽川を越えて笏谷石で建造された「愛宕坂」から入ります。ところどころ残る雪に気を付けつつ緩やかな石段を経由、大ぶりな枝垂桜が枝を広げる広場をやや進んで拝殿に到達します。100m強の低山の中腹あたりですから大した高さはありませんが、途中急斜面の北東側に広がる福井市中心街の夜景は見どころです。

This museum has a permanent exhibition consisting of three areas themed around the relationship between people and nature: Mt. Asuwa Nature Encyclopedia, History of our Hometown and Nature of our Hometown. It also has an observatory which it uses to popularize celestial events so that many people can enjoy them. The museum also holds various observation gatherings and courses and you can participate in star-gazing without prior reservation.

All the temple buildings including the main hall were designated as National Important Cultural Properties in 2008. This temple is famous for its vegetarian cuisine using seasonal ingredients such as wild and farmed vegetables, seaweed and grains. Reservations are accepted for groups of 10 or more and it is possible to combine a meal with courses in zazen (seated meditation) and shakyo (sutra copying), for example. This temple, where you can sightsee, participate and eat, is also the 10th stop for collecting amulets on the Hokuriku 33 Kannon Pilgrimage.

This roughly 2,200 meter-long tunnel of pink flowers extends from Kidabashi Bridge to Shinakaribashi Bridge. In addition to old-growth Yoshino cherries, a great variety of other cherry blossoms have been planted here on the bank of the Asuwa River. Each year during the cherry blossom season, the trees are lit up at night for the Fukui Spring Festival held here. Visitors to the festival can enjoy the wondrous world created by the garden lantern style footlights.

Fukui Fukui-shi Sanaicho 8-21

A temple of the Tendai Sect Shinsei School of Buddhism. It was once the Asakura family temple and located in Jiromaru, Fukui City but the Asakura family collapsed after Oda Nobunaga invaded Echizen. It was moved to its current location by Shibata Katsuie who took control of the region after them. After this it was carefully protected as his family's temple. On the temple grounds you'll find the grave of Shibata Katsuie as well as a stone monument dedicated to his wife, Oichi. Various belongings for both the Asakura family and Shibata family are stored within the temple's treasure hall.

柴田勝家とお市の方の墓所があります。宗派は天台真盛宗とあり、延徳年間の朝倉貞景の発願と門柱にしっかりと記されています。訪れたときは地域の子どもたちが堂内で何かの練習をしていました。地域との密着性も高いお寺ですね。柴田勝家公資料館という建物も敷地の中に建っています。

Built by the first Lord of Fukui domain Hideyasu Yuki in 1606, and then serving as the castle for the Echizen Matsudaira family for 270 years and 17 generations, Fukui Castle has been reduced to only a part of the moat and its stone walls today. The well called “Wealth Well” left at the foot of the tower base is said to be the origin of the name “Fukui.”

Fukui Fukui-shi Keya 3-8-21

A shrine which enshrines Nitta Yoshisada, a military commander from the Period of Northern and Southern Courts (mid-late 14th century), and his family. Nitta fell in battle in 1338 and nearly some 300 years later his helmet was discovered by a local peasant. Because of that the area came to be called Nittazuka. In 1870 a small wayside shrine was constructed which would later become Fujishima Shrine. It's said that people who pray will be blessed to do well in both sports and studies and that it helps to ward off evil. Amulets marked with the kanji for 'One' as is said to be hand-written by Nitta Yoshisada are offered for purchase.

This shrine was built in 1941 to worship the souls of fallen soldiers from Fukui including Hashimoto Keigaku, a patriot of the Meiji Restoration. It is reputed for its strong, tear-resistant hand-made Japanese paper (Echizen washi) amulets made by Ichibei Iwano, a national treasure, giving the shrine even more divine virtues.

田原町駅から徒歩15分ほど。 1941年創建。祭神は明治維新前後から大東亜戦争までの福井県出身の国事殉難者。現社殿は福井大震災後に再建されたもので鉄筋コンクリート造。狛犬の阿像は震災でも倒れなかったので「不倒の狛犬」、吽像は震災で倒れ落ちたが壊れなかったので「無傷の狛犬」と名付けられている。境内には福井出身の武士・思想家である橋本左内に因んだ「急流中底之柱」「背のび石」がある。

A castle town streetscape dating back to the warring states period, when the Asakura clan ruled over Echizen. The samurai residences used by the Asakura clan and their chief retainers have been rebuilt. This is included as part of the Ichijodani Asakura Family Historic Ruins site. It has been designated as a National Special Historic Site. The houses were restored based on unearthed cornerstones and foundations and give the idea of what houses were like back in that period. They have been used as shooting locations for various commercials. On the grounds is a spot where you can rent and dress in kimono and you can walk the townscape wearing the kimono.

Founded in 1981, the Ichijodani Asakura Family Site Museum exhibits roughly 500 pieces unearthed from the Ichijodani Asakura Clans Ruins, including many items that are Nationally Designated Important Cultural Properties. Also, on display are excavated materials and topographical models of Ichijodani as well as a reproduction model, offering a look at the history of the ruins and the Asakura family.
Kitanosho Castle Ruins Shibata Park

A park on the site of the former Kitanosho Castle. In 1575 Shibata Katsuie was given control of the Echizen area by Oda Nobunaga and he had Kitanosho castle on the plains constructed. It was a magnificent castle with a nine-story tower and a large castle town surrounding it but fell just eight years later when attacked by the army of Toyotomi Hideyoshi. In the park are bronze statues of Shibata Katsuie, his wife Oichi, and their three daughters. Some historical remains including Onigawara roof tiles and chains from a pontoon bridge still remain.

Yokokan was the Fukui feudal lord’s Matsudaira Family villa and was called the “Osensui Residence” during the Edo period. It had a Japanese strolling pond garden with a large pond at its center. Various ingenuities have been assimilated into the garden and it is considered that the view from around the banks of the pond and the view from within the residence were taken into consideration. The sukiya zukuri style (in the style of a tea ceremony house) of building called the “Ochaya” located on the east of the pond plays a central role in this building. You can have green tea and sweets at “Otsukiminoma”, and you can spend your time leisurely while enjoying the scenery with Japanese Iris being reflected in the pond.

Ichijo Falls is a waterfall located in the upper reaches of Ichijodani River in Fukui City, Fukui Prefecture. This is where the famous sword master Sasaki Kojiro mastered his secret sword technique, known as Tsubame Gaeshi. It’s a popular spot for tourists who can witness the large mass of water crashing down the 12 meter high rock face. There is a statue of Sasaki Kojiro at the entrance to the waterfall and there are also some walking paths in the area.
Tsukumo Bridge

The original Tsukumo Bridge was famous for its usual half-wood, half-stone construction, with the northern half being made from wood, and the southern half being made from stone. Also known by names such as Kitanosho Ohashi Bridge, the bridge has historical ties to Shibata Katsuie. Built after Katsuie took command of Kitanosho Castle, it survived for 330 years until it was replaced in 1909.

This local specialty products store carries an abundance of Fukui's most famous goods, including Kitamaebune no Kawamoto's kombu (kelp) products, and homemade yakisaba (grilled mackerel) sushi. A popular destination, the store also has a space where you can watch how Fukui delicacies are made and even try making some yourself. Of particular note, this is the only place you can watch a live demonstration of the process involved in making tesuki oboro kombu (handmade shredded kelp), a rare traditional technique dating back 400 years.
