    This museum, which was reopened after renovations in 2016, is a place where you can encounter a new kind of “crab culture.” In this hands-on facility, visitors can have fun and learn about Echizen crabs and the mysteries of the Sea of Japan. The facility is divided into seven zones including the Crab Lab where you can study the different kinds of crabs and the structure of their bodies and the Under-sea Tunnel where you can see the different fish of the seasons off the Echizen coast.

    Fukui Pref. Nyugunechizenchou Ota 113-1
    This shrine, which has been fervently worshipped by many people including the Imperial Court and revered as a sacred prayer ground since the Nara period, is located in the hometown of the Oda Nobunaga’s ancestors who attended the shrine, the 2nd highest ranked in Echizen Province, as Shinto priests and Echizen Ota no Sho Manor administrators and is famous as a shrine where Lord Oda worshipped the local deity. The main shrine, the auxiliary shrine and the main Oda shrine have all been designated as cultural properties by the prefecture.

    越前国二之宮で、織田一族発祥の地と言われる神社です。 御祭神は素戔嗚大神(すさのおのおおかみ)、気比大神(けひのおおかみ)、忍熊王(おしくまのみこ)です。一切の厄事災難を祓い清める神として尊崇されています。

    The Chihiro Iwasaki Birthplace Museum preserves the atmosphere of the Taisho Period (1912-1926), when the famous illustrator was born. The museum opened in 2004, and its gallery space features rotating exhibits of her art arranged in cooperation with the Chihiro Art Museum, allowing visitors to enjoy man aspects of her world.

    It was a nice surprise to find out that one of my favourite artists had a museum in Echizen. We happened upon it by accident. It is a small house but it gives you an idea of the house that she grew...

    Fukui Pref. Sabaeshi Shinyokoe 2-3-4 Inside the glasses hall
    This glasses museum is located in Sabae City, Fukui Prefecture, which produces more than 90% of the glasses made in Japan. In addition to in-depth exhibits on the history of eyeglasses, the museum also features a glasses shop where visitors can try out the latest models of Made in JAPAN glasses, a cafe offering sweets from Sabae City, a souvenir corner, and more. Visitors can also try their hand at making a one-of-a-kind pair of glasses. The museum is about a 15-minute walk from JR Sabae City.

    メガネミュージアムの2fにあるカフェです。軽食がと飲み物が中心のお店でした。 ケーキセットを頼みました。チーズケーキとアイスコーヒーで値段は700円で普通のおいしさでした。店内はメガネ会館の店舗やオブジェ、ガラス張りになって風景も見渡せ良い雰囲気でした。

    This museum was opened in 1990 and is an archive with the theme of kitamae-bune (cargo vessels) which played an important role in the distribution of commodities and cultural interaction between the Sea of Japan, the Seto Inland Sea and the various regions of Kyoto and Osaka from the end of the Edo period to the middle of the Meiji period. Focusing on archives relating to the management of cargo vessels by the Ukon family, this museum offers various activities such as special exhibitions, forums and study groups in addition to its themed permanent exhibitions displaying archives relating to kitamae-bune remaining in the village.

    国道305号線沿いにあり、通りがかりに寄ってみました。展望台まで行っても一時間弱といったところ。西洋館は中まで見られます。展示は昔の地方の博物館というところですが、右近家の歴史が興味深いので、面白い。損保ジャパン寄贈の旗が道沿いにあり、「?」となるけど、見れば納得。

    A Soto Buddhist temple located in Shoden Town, Echizen City, Fukui Prefecture which has come to be known as the “Cat Temple” after being featured frequently in television programs and other media. The temple takes care of stray, sick, and injured cats; spays and neuters strays; and helps cats find new homes; at any given time, dozens of cats are being taken care of on the temple grounds. The temple works with Fukui Prefecture health and welfare centers and also periodically holds events to help their cats find new homes. The temple is visited by countless cat-lovers from around the country.

    Fukui Echizen-shi Kyomachi 1-4-35
    A shrine in Kyomachi 1-Chome, Echizen City. To reduce the burden of pilgrimage a local official decreed that all the divine spirits of Echizen Province would be enshrined together in this one location with the primary enshrined deities being Onamuchi-no-Mikoto and Emrpess Koken. Locals refer to the shrine by the familiar name Osonja-san and lots of visitors gather for the July 1st summer festival where Shinto rituals including the Chi-no-Wa Kuguri (Passing through a woven grass ring) are held.

    武生駅から徒歩10分ほど。 創建年不明。739年に聖武天皇の勅願で大己貴命(現在の主祭神)を合祀。前田利家が府中城を築城する際に現在地に移転。現社殿は1926年再建で木造銅板葺き。拝殿に掛けられている社号額「總社」は海軍大将・岡田啓介の揮毫。総社だけあって、越前国中官社・百二十六座など様々な神が祀られている。

    Fukui Echizen-shi Kyomachi 3-3-5
    A temple in Kyomachi 3-Chome, Echizen City. The temple was founded in 1488 by Shinsei, the founder of the Shinseishu Sect of Tendai Buddhism, as the head temple of the sect. On the grounds is the main gate, which is adorned with sculptures of 16 Buddhist saints, a carp climbing a waterfall, and more as well as a stone Buddha who is said to appear to midnight watchmen checking for fires.

    大きな屋根の山門が参道から目立つ天台真盛宗寺院でした。境内は明治天皇の行在所となった旨が紹介されており、又広い境内には幼稚園が併設されていました。更に多くの塔頭が同じ境内に立ち並んでいました。

    Fukui Echizen-shi Kyomachi 3-4-34
    A temple in Kyomachi 3-Chome, Echizen. It was founded in 1525. The temple has been a gathering point for local believers for some time and on the grounds you'll find the Nichiren Daiseijin (Great Teacher of Nichiren Buddhism) wooden statue of Nichizo, a monk from the Kamakura period. It is also called the Yakuyoke no Soshi (The founder of protection against bad luck) and the Ichiboku-Santai no Soshi (The founder of three Buddha statues from one Tree).

    「九識霊断」を紹介しる看板が掲げられていた日蓮宗寺院でした。旧市名の「武生市観光協会」による説明板が立っており本堂は明治19年に再建された旨が紹介されていました。

    Hokuriku’s only large-scale hall of worship, Oshio Hachimangu Shrine is a Nationally Designated Important Cultural Property that features a main worship hall and many smaller shrines. It offers a lot to see, with many cultural properties like the temple bell crafted during the Northern and Southern Dynasties Period. The main hall is 15.76 meters wide and 8.88 meters deep, and features a hip-and-gable structure with a shingled roof.

    越前国二ノ宮の古社で、結構大きな神社です。一の鳥居から進んで、二の鳥居をくぐって、長い階段の参道、三の鳥居、そして神門、拝殿があります。室町時代の建立と考えられる長床式の入母屋造柿葺です。左手に神社でありながら鐘楼があり梵鐘は越前市指定文化財です。右手に絵馬電兼神輿庫があり、越前市指定文化財の絵馬が所狭しと掛けられています。立派な神輿が置かれていました。

    A museum in Ozowara, Echizen, Nyu. In addition to the museum, which shows off the charms of Echizen pottery through their collection on display, they also have a tea room and garden on the premises. They also offer pottery classes where you can experience electric pottery wheels and hand throwing as well as ceramic painting.

    The museum was newly established in 2017 and is located on the grounds of the Echizen Pottery Village, introducing Echizen pottery from the Heian period to the modern age. The site also houses the former Mizuno Family Residence, a reconstructed old private house in Fukui, and two authentic tea rooms, Tenshindo and Tenshin'an.

    A temple in Fukakusa 1-Chome, Echizen City. It was founded by the monk Tsugen Jakurei in 1368. It was the family temple for Honda Tomimasa, chief retainer of the Fukui Domain, and is still home to the family mausoleum. The grounds were the site of an ancient temple now called the Fukakusa Haiji Temple and relics have been excavated dating back to the Hakuho period (late 7th century CE).

    A shrine in Otaki-cho, Echizen City. The inner shrine is located at the top of Mt. Gongen with another shrine in the village in the foothills. This is the only shrine in Japan that enshrines Kawakami Gozen, the god of paper making, who was said to have brought the technique of papermaking to the area 1500 years ago. The main shrine building and front shrine building of the village shrine are examples of late Edo period architecture and have been designated Important Cultural Properties of Japan.

    A museum located within the Manyo-no-Sato Ajimano Botanical Garden in Yokawa-cho, Echizen City. Centering around the concept of Romance and Love Poetry in the Manyoshu collection of poetry they have exhibits related to the different poems, especially that of poem 63 sent by Nakatomi-no-Yakamori, who had been swept away to Ajimano, to Sanonootogami-no-Otome who remained in Kyoto. In the park you can view plants related to the Manyoshu poems.

    A historical building in Mizuochi-cho 4-Chome, Sabae City. The Uryu residence served as housing for numerous generations of chief priest of the adjacent Shinmeisha Shrine and was constructed during the Genroku period in the late 17th and early 18th centuries. It is the oldest private house in the prefecture and has been designated as an Important Cultural Property of Japan.

    A temple located along National Route 417 in Honmachi 3-Chome, Sabae City. This temple is tightly affiliated with the monk Shinran, founder of the Jodo Shinshu sect of Buddhism. On the Shisokumon main temple gate is carving by Hidari Jingoro called Kakedashi no Ryuu (Departing Dragon) and the gate is a designated Cultural Property of the Prefecture. On the second Sunday of each month they hold the popular Seiichi market with numerous stalls selling antiques and local gourmet foods.

    A Buddhist statue enshrined along the Isaribi Kaido Road in Tamagawa, Echizen Town, Nyu County. Legend states that long ago the enshrined statue of eleven-faced Kannon was caught by happenstance in a local fisherman's net. It was originally enshrined in a natural cave as the name suggests but the cave collapsed in 1989. It is now in a man-made concrete tunnel, surrounded by illuminated Echizen-ware pottery.

    Fukui Nanjo-gun Minamiechizencho Akuwa
    A historic location in Akuwa, Minamiechizen Town, Nanjo County. This is the ruin of Somayama Castle, which was the base point for the southern army during the Period of Northern and Southern Dynasties when the imperial court was split and was the castle where Nitta Yoshisada barricaded himself in. Based on cornerstones and other remains found during archaeological digs it is believed that the inner citadel was situated 492-meters above sea level atop the peak with eastern and western sections built to either side. It's been designated as a National Historic Site.

Northeast of Kyoto, the ancient Tojinbo Cliffs separate Fukui prefecture from the Sea of Japan in a stretch of land well worth exploring. Water sports and seaside delicacies are available in abundance as the spectacular rugged coastline flattens down into beaches to the west of the prefecture, while inland, Fukui is home to Zen Buddhist temples and historic ruins.
