This historic Buddhist temple, situated along National Route 249 in Wajima City, Ishikawa Prefecture, was founded in 1321 as the head temple of Soto Buddhism. The Soto head temple was moved to Yokohama City's Tsurumi in 1910 after a large fire, but this temple was later rebuilt, regaining its position as a fundamental center for training and study. Today, the temple offers zazen meditation activities and, with an advance reservation, visitors can also try the temple's shojin ryoryi traditional Japanese Buddhist cuisine. The menu consists of only two choices: either just a honzen main course meal or a honzen meal plus side dishes. This authentic shojin ryori cuisine is made with seasonal vegetables and fruits with a focus on ingredients picked by ascetic monks in undeveloped woodlands, and the food is served on Wajima lacquerware.

Ishikawa Areas

around-area-map

Long, thin Ishikawa prefecture runs along the Sea of Japan up into Noto Peninsula. Highlights of the seaside towns lining the west coast include Kanazawa, often described as a "Little Kyoto" thanks to its old wooden tea houses and geisha culture as well as its picturesque Japanese garden, Kenroku-en.
