This restaurant located in Chuo Ward, Niigata City, Niigata Prefecture, specializing in tonkatsu (breaded, deep-fried pork cutlet) was founded in the early Showa period and is famous for being the birthplace of the Niigata specialty tarekatsu-don. They continued to open many more branches and franchises while safeguarding the unique taste created on the food stall where it all began. The tarekatsu-don with five thinly cut, tender pork cutlets dipped in a sweet soy-sauce based tare, or sauce, and combined with a piping hot bowl of rice, is a unique Niigata taste popular with many people outside of the prefecture. Upstairs you’ll find seating at tables while downstairs it’s all at the counter, making it an easy place to grab some food even when you’re by yourself.

Id been cycling all morning so I was after a big and tasty lunch. From the pictures I was worried that just pork and rice might be a bit bland but it was delicious. The seasoning on the breaded...

This Japanese-style restaurant is located near the JR Niigata Station. Its purely Japanese appearance, like a sake brewery, is attractive to customers. The relaxing interior, from which the garden can be seen, is an elegant space that can be used for both course meals and for entertaining guests. The Sado Koshihikari rice, cooked in copper pots and traditional cooking stoves, is highly reputed, and there are an abundance of dishes that use Niigata’s specialty products, such as blackthroat perch, Sado sushi and A4 and A5 rank Murakami beef. The alcohol-tasting six drinks of Echigo menu, which allows customers to compare the taste of six different sake, is also very popular.

The place is next to the station, so if the weather is not good, or you just want to chill out in the afternoon and eat some fresh sushi, sashimi, or nabe, just go here. The only problem there was a...

Located in Minamiuonuma City, Niigata Prefecture, this Japanese food restaurant has a large iron pot for cooking rice as its landmark and is in an old house said to be over 200 years old. The floor hearths and large cooking stove give it a distinctive atmosphere. Its rice is made by boiling Minamiuonuma-produced Koshihikari rice provided directly by contracted farmers. Homegrown vegetables, char, summer sweetfish, and other seasonal ingredients are also used. The kamameshi hot pot with local chicken, crab, matsutake mushrooms, and more is especially popular.

We love the place. Its adviseable to book as it is always busy, and deservedly so. Try the super sized onigiri! The ambience and the food as well as the service are outstanding.

The restaurant founder conceived of the dish with Kitaoji Rosanjin. The “sake oyako” dish, made with Murakami-produced salmon and salmon roe, is quite popular. There’s also “noppe (soup with fried tofu and other ingredients),” tender Namban shrimp, oysters, and other types of Niigata cuisine, not to mention a great lineup of local brews.

    Niigata Joetsu-shi Koyasu 1363
This Japanese restaurant is so popular with locals, ask about where to get good kamameshi rice dishes in Echigo and its name is sure to come up. Situated on a corner of the Koyasu apartment complex intersection close to Niigata Prefectural Central Hospital, here customers can enjoy piping hot kamameshi. The restaurant notably uses salts as the base flavor for its kamameshi instead of soy sauce. The resulting kamameshi is simple and thus conversely allows the innate flavors of the ingredients used to make it shine through. The restaurant makes its kamameshi to order, and on weekends it fills up with customers practically instantaneously. In addition to kamameshi, the restaurant also serves eel and chicken dishes as well as tempura and donburi rice bowls.

This Murakami beef specialty shop is about five minutes' drive from Murakami-Senamionsen Interchange of the Nihonkai-Tohoku Expressway. The building was formerly a Murakami village hatago, an Edo period travel lodge, and now they offer up fresh Murakami village beef, which is often described as being of a whole other class to other Kuroge Wagyu beef. Murakami beef calves are carefully selected for the highest quality and are then fed on copious koshihikari rice straw and hay, making this one of Japan's highest ranked beef brands by the Nation Beef Cow Association. The meat is colorful and flavorful, and the sirloin served up rare offers a whole new level of enjoyment. This beef, with its rich flavor and delicately sweet aroma, is perfect with wine. Pairing your beef with the shop's stock of red wine or local sake can bring your meal into perfect harmony!

Located on the second floor of the station, here customers can enjoy a relaxing meal along with a view of the Agano River just across the way. The chef particularly recommends the special oyakodon chicken and egg over rice, which is topped with huge chunks of brand name Koshi no Tori chicken raised on herbs amidst the area’s abundant natural beauty. The choice dish consists of flavorful thigh meat wrapped in thick, creamy scrambled eggs seasoned with Japanese dashi stock. "This historical restaurant, about five minutes' walk from Echigoyuzawa Station, is marked by the tokkuri sake pitcher above the shop's sign. It offers a number of dishes, primarily focusing on iwana (char) river fish, so rare as to be called the ""phantom fish.” The fresh iwana served up here are all taken live from the shop's tank. They create all kinds of dishes from it, including as sashimi, fried, or even pickled skins, and their full set is not to be missed. The shops popular ""hidden dish"" is Udon-Suki. They use smooth, firm udon noodles in their own special sauce along with a mix of seasonal ingredients for a perfectly harmonized dish. The shop gets quite crowded in high-season and on weekends, so it's best to make reservations."
