  • Daitozan Art Museum

    Nigata Pref. Tokamachishi Matsunoyama 1222
    This museum and garden is the refurbished home of the local Murayama family. It is about 20 minutes from Matsudai Station on the Hokuhoku Line on the Tokei Bus. The Murayama family's 700-year history and tradition are displayed along with daily items used by the family, paintings and writings, pottery, and other art works. The Murayama family were also heavily involved with Niigata born author Ango Sakaguchi. You can find articles that belonged to him and other relics such as caricatures written in the guest book, books and other related materials. The museum is closed in the winter due to the snow.
  • Kanetsugu Naoe Denseikan Museum

    This museum is located 20 minutes' walk from the JR Joetsu Line's Muikamachi Station. The museum was built in response to the Taiga Drama, Tenchijin, in the image of the birthplace of the Sengoku military commander, Naoe Kanetsugu. The museum was built in an old relocated manor house in Senbuchi Park at the foot of Mt. Sakadoyama. It contains various exhibits such as armor and spears, and household items and documents which show us what life was like at the time. Among these, is the Naoe Letter, which is said to have been written in 1600, and although the letter on display is a replica, it is still a very valuable document. Replicas sold at the museum shop are also popular with visitors.
  • Bokushi-dori Street

    This townscape was built around the concept of preserving the history and culture of Snow Country. Its beauty has won many awards including the 2015 Asian City Landscape Awards. This street stretches south from JR Shiozawa Station along Prefectural Route 365 and is lined by characteristic Snow Country buildings marked by their gabled roofs stretching out over the walkways. Walking along you'll think you've slipped into the past with the scenery evoking the Edo period post town imagery. It's the site of various events including the Shiozawa Seppu Snow Festival in February and the Shiozawa Festival in July.
  • Echigo Yukikura-kan

    This brewery is managed by Tamagawa Sake Brewery, a company well-known for its Uonuma Tamafumi and Koshino Tamaume sake. It was founded in 1673, and has continued to create Japanese sake since the time of Tokugawa Ietsuna. Visitors can tour the brewery, and through the course of the 15-minute tour, can see places such as the snow warehouse, the place where steaming of the brewer's rice takes place and the storehouse. During the tour, visitors can drink the spring water that is used during the process and if they bring a bottle, can take it home with them. Finally, there is a free tasting session, where visitors can enjoy more than ten different kinds of Japanese sake, and depending on the date they visit, may even be able to enjoy some freshly-made sake. The Yukikura Pickles (homemade sake pickles) and sake cakes which are available for purchase make wonderful gifts.
  • Shioritoge Pass

    This mountain pass is along National Route 352 in Uonuma City, Niigata Prefecture. At its highest point you'll find the start of the trailhead to climb Mt Echigo-Komagatake, one of Japan's 100 most famous mountains. Every October the Uonuma City Tourist Association offers a shuttle bus called Unkai and Takigumo, a prime spot for photography. Also, from mid-October to early-November take time to enjoy the various autumn colors painting the scenery as you travel along this beautiful mountain pass. The pass is open to traffic from mid-June through early-November. During the winter the pass is closed due to snow and you will be unable to use it to access Fukushima.
  • Lake Okutadami Pleasure Boat

    This picturesque basin in Uonuma City, Niigata Prefecture upstream of Tadami River is surrounded by a number of tall mountains over 2,000 meters, including Mt. Arasawadake, Mt. Echigo-Komagatake, and Mt. Hiragatake. The basin is the location of Lake Okutadami, a man-made lake formed by the construction of the Okutadami Dam, the setting of the film Whiteout. In addition to being a place to enjoy fishing for species including Japanese pond smelt, the lake also features a number of facilities on its western shore, including a sightseeing boat dock, a campsite, and a hot springs spa. Nearby Naka Arasawa is popular for its great views of beautiful autumn foliage in the fall and of fresh greenery and Okutadami's natural splendor in the summer.
  • Matsudaijoshi Park Campsite

    This huge park located halfway up Mt. Matsushirojo in Tokamachi City leverages the former site of Matsushiro Castle, which is surrounded by virgin forests and terraced rice-fields. Guests at the park can interact with its diverse nature. The park's facilities are also top-notch. They include about 25 outdoor art installations, a promenade from which guests can view the park's hydrangeas and irises, and a campsite (reservation required). The reproduction castle, built in 1981, is popular for the views of the cityscapes of Matsushiro District and the mountains of Uonuma from its observation deck. It also serves as the finish line for the Nottore Matsushirojo snow obstacle race held every March.
  • Ryugakubo

    Ryugakubo spring, located in Yachi, Tsunan-machi, gushes forth from the Tsunan valley and has been selected as one of Japan's top 100 springs. The spring comes up from the Naeba volcanic layer at the rate of 30tons per minute. This incredible rate of turnover means that the water never muddies or clouds and the spring has become an intrinsic part of everyday life as a source of water for local residents. The Japanese beech trees and Mongolian oaks that surround the spring give it a mystical quality and there are many legends of dragons associated with the pond. The pond is an easy one-minute walk from the parking lot but as you continue around to the rear you'll find the Ryugakubo-jinja Shrine. The shrine draws lots of visitors and there you can ladle some of the spring water for yourself.

    This tourist information center is located directly in front of Echigo-Yuzawa Station. Managed by the Echigo-Yuzawa Hot Spring Tourist Association it mainly focusses on Yuzawa Town but also has information for Minamiuonuma City, Uonuma City, Tokamachi City, and Tsunan Town in Niigata as well as Minakami Town in Gunma and Sakae Village in Nagano. They have information for everything from winter sports to regional specialties, snow country cuisine, and traditional arts and crafts. From events and activities to food and where to stay they'll be able to help you plan your trip.
  • Lake Daigenta

    This lake is 20-minutes by car from the Yuzawa Interchange. It is a man-made lake made by the damming of Daigenta River by the first arch shaped dam in Japan, one of the Tangible Cultural Properties of Japan. Surrounded by magnificent scenes of nature including Mt. Daigenta, also called the Matterhorn of the Orient, the lake is famous for its beautiful seasonal scenery from verdant greens to autumn reds. The lake surface is like a painting reflecting the scenery and during the summer you can take a boat out over the lake. The lake is 1.5 kilometers in circumference and a walk around the lake takes approximately 40 minutes. It's a peaceful walk and the laid-back hiking trail is very popular. Construction to reinforce the aging Daigenta dam will continue as planned until 2020. While under construction there will be restricted access.

    Mt. Sakado is a 20-minute walk from Muikamachi Station. As the ancient site of Sakado Castle the mountain has become symbolic to the people of Minamiuonuma City. Standing 634 meters high there is a hiking course from the base to the summit that takes approximately one hour. Of the four fields of dogtooth violets in the city this is the most popular. The best time to see them is from early-April to early May and as you hike from the base to the summit you can enjoy the flowers dotting the landscape including anemones, asteroids, and oriental swamp pinks along with the dogtooth violets. From the summit you can see the mountains all the way along the Joetsu border to the Uonuma Basin.
  • Uonuma Skyline Uonuma Observation Decks

    Located a 20-minute drive from Ishiuchi Station at the top of the Uonuma Skyline, this observation deck sits at an elevation of 920 meters. The skyline is a 20 kilometer-long scenic public road between Hakka Pass and Juni Pass known for great seasonal of fresh greenery in spring and summer and autumn foliage in the fall. Visitors to the observation deck, construction of which started in 1967, can see all the way from Shiozawa to Yuzawa. On clear days, it is even possible to see all the way to Mt. Iijisan. The observation deck is also known as the southernmost spot in Niigata Prefecture for enjoying nighttime views of the cities below. It is also a great place to enjoy an overhead view of the night sky.

    宿場の湯から湯沢方面に向かう時、トンネルの手前で左に向かうとトンネルがあり、ダム方向にアクセスできるが、一般の人は通行できなくなってしまった。

    週末に六日町エリアを訪れた際に立ち寄りました。無料の駐車場は広くて止めやすいです。駐車場から神社に向かうと石の階段があり、手を叩くと響きます。龍鳴と言うそうで神の歓びのしるしと看板に書かれていました。観光に訪れる価値はあると思います。

    お寺さんのような建物もあるのですが、お寺さんじゃないような建物もあって不思議でおもしろかったです。行った時間が少し遅かったのかゆっくり見学することができませんでした。堂内に置かれている観音様が有名のようですね。見れなくて残念です。拝観時間に注意してください。
