This specialty Japanese tea shop is located in Murakami City, Niigata Prefecture, said to be the northernmost limit of tea production. It was established in 1868. The shop cultivates, manufactures and sells Murakami tea, which has a long history spanning back to the early Edo period. The distinctively mellow astringent and faintly sweet flavor of Murakami tea is due to its being cultivated in a region where the days are short, and the temperature difference between night and day, severe. The shop’s Snow Country black tea is also popular, with its mild flavor. The shop also serves matcha and Snow Country black tea soft-serve ice cream between March and October. The tradesman’s house with an open fireplace also allows customers to eat-in.
