    It is said that when the great priest Jigen Daishi Tenkai founded Toeizan Kan-eiji Temple at the demon's gate of Edo Castle, he built this Kannon Hall in the image of Kiyomizu Temple in Kyoto, in analogy with the relationship between Heian-kyo and Hieizan. The main deity is the thousand-armed Avalokitesvara Bodhisattva, which was transferred from Kiyomizu-dera Temple in Kyoto, and since the Kannon of child-rearing is enshrined as a side deity, the temple is also known as the Kannon of childbirth, safe delivery, and child-rearing.

    I stumbled upon this temple when I entered Ueno Park, and was impressed by its lovely elegance. An especially nice view from below, with an unusually shaped tree framing it.

    A Buddhist temple located close to JR Uguisudani Station in Uenosakuragi, Taito City, Tokyo. The temple was founded by the great monk Tenkai in 1625. The temple originally possessed vast grounds in the center of what is now Ueno Park. During the Boshin War (1968-1969), however, the temple was the site of the so-called Ueno War, when retainers of the old feudal government shut themselves up in the temple, ultimately resulting in the majority of the temple burning to the ground. The temple's lands were also sized during the Meiji period. The temple was also a family temple affiliated with the Tokugawa shogun clan, and six Tokugawa generals are buried in a mausoleum dedicated to their service on the temple grounds.
