    Kashiya Yokocho (Candy Shop Alley) was selected as one of Japan’s “Top 100 Scent Scapes” by the Ministry of the Environment in 2001. It was originally set up to make and offer inexpensive sweets for heavily damaged Tokyo after the Great Kanto Earthquake, and there are still more than 20 shops in operation. The cheap downtown style sweets they sell have many fans.

  • Omiya Bonsai Village

    Omiya Bonsai Village is a place full of outstanding bonsai plants that is located a few minutes' walk from the Omiya Bonsai Art Museum. Omiya Bonsai Village traces its origins to the period immediately after the Great Kanto Earthquake of 1923, when a group of bonsai growers from Tokyo relocated to the Omiya area; at its peak, Omiya Bonsai Village had around 30 commercial bonsai gardens. Today, there are still five bonsai gardens in the village, each cultivating its own unique types of bonsai. Some of the gardens offer bonsai-growing experience activities. Omiya Dai Bonsai Festival is held on May 3-5 every year, attracting large numbers of bonsai enthusiasts from Japan and overseas.

  • Kuromon-dori

    A street once lined with Chichibu textile wholesalers which still retains structures reminiscent of the 1920s and 30s. Many of the buildings are designated as National Tangible Cultural Properties. The side streets connecting Kuromon-dori and Kaitsugisho-dori are known as the “wind alleys”, and walking them, you’ll feel like you’ve taken a trip back in time.

    Planted along National Route 463, locally called Saidai-dori Road, in the western area of Saitama City are nearly 2400 Japanese zelkova trees, the prefectural tree of Saitama. The spot is famous as the longest row of zelkova trees in all of Japan. Zelkova have long grown naturally throughout Saitama prefecture and have been designated as natural monuments throughout the area, including the Great Zelkova of Seiganji, leading to this location being considered a symbol of Saitama.
