    A 320-kilometer road that runs between Ueda City in Nagano Prefecture and Nikko City in Tochigi Prefecture via Gunma Prefecture's Kusatsu-machi and Numata City. Winding through the region thought to have Japan's most German-esque scenery, it's the local take on Germany's Romantic Road that runs from Bavaria to the Austrian border. Divided into the Nagano, Gunma, and Tochigi areas it passes through three national parks, a highland region, an area with beautiful volcanic landforms, modern castle towns, and hot springs enclaves. Many Japanese poets have written about the areas along the road, making it one of Japan's most romantic drives, accenting the natural scenery.

    A shopping street built on the approach leading to Ikaho Shrine in Ikaho, Ikaho Town, Shibukawa City. On either side of the 365 stone steps are a range of stores such as an onsen, souvenir shops, restaurants, cafes, specialty shops selling onsen-manju (a bun stuffed with azuki-bean paste) and amusement arcades where the old-fashioned shooting games can be enjoyed.

    This four kilometer long stretch of road on National Route extending from Shimo-Ogawa is lined with some 30 farm stands and markets open from late April to early November. Due to the many stands selling grilled corn on the cob, a local specialty, drivers will smell the fragrant aroma of grilled corn in their cars. The stands and markets sell grilled corn on the cob; fresh farm produce; and local specialty products such as goheimochi broiled rice cake skewers and Japanese pickles - the selection varies from establishment to establishment. The best time to visit is in August. Hours vary by establishment.

  • Sainokawara-dori Street

    This is a street continuing from Yubatake in the center of Kusatsu Hot Spring, one of the three most famous hot springs in Japan, towards Sainokawara Park. Attractive shops such as places to dine and souvenir shops line the street for a walking distance of 10 to15 minutes. There are many people dressed in yukatas (summer kimonos) walking along the street so visitors can enjoy the scene typical of an onsen town.
