  • Rinnoji Taiyuin Mausoleum

    The mausoleum of the third shogun of Tokugawa, Iemitsu, located at Nikko-zan Rinno-ji Temple. It was built by the 4th Shogun, Ietsuna, in accordance with Iemitsu's will. Although the color tone is more subdued than that of Toshogu Shrine, there are many important cultural properties such as the massive Nitenmon Gate and the Kokamon Gate that looks like the ryugu Dragon Palace, and the Main Hall is designated as a national treasure. The temple grounds are lined with 315 lanterns, offering a different atmosphere from that of Toshogu Shrine.

    "This souvenir shop directly operated by the Asaya Hotel is located in Nikko City, Tochigi Prefecture. It carries numerous original products and Nikko souvenirs such as ""Asaya Tokusei Onsen Manju"" and ""Asaya Tokusei Wagyu Curry."" In addition, there is also a rest space inside the kominka (old Japanese-style house) style interior, making it visited by many tourists."

    お土産屋さんです。駅前にあるので、とても便利です。あさやホテルさんの作りたてのお饅頭が売っています。建物は昔からのもので風情があります。試食もたくさんありましたよ!

    This facility in Tokorono, Nikko City has displays on traditional Nikko crafts including Nikko woodcarvings, as well as the tools used to make them. They also offer workshops, including one that gives you a chance to make your own Nikko woodcarving. Other facilities include a shop that sells Nikko woodcarvings and a demonstration facility where you can sign up for a workshop to try kniting the straw sandals.

    木彫り体験ができる施設で、おぼんや手鏡(小・中)に植物や三猿を彫ることができます。職人さんが丁寧に教えてくれるので素人でもできます。おぼんなどには下絵が書いてあるので、それに沿って彫れば失敗はしません。手鏡中サイズで1440円でした。

    Tochigi Nikko-shi Nasushiobara-shi
    This 1000-meter-high and 28 kilometer-long scenic route connects Kinugawa Onsen with Shiohara Onsen. It has many scenic spot with natural beauty to enjoy such as Taikooroshino Falls and Shirataki Falls. The views from the Fujimidai observatory are also excellent. The fall foliage is especially beautiful around mid-October to early November each year. The Kinugawa Onsen and Kawaji Onsen hot springs districts are also located nearby.

    This museum is on Prefectural Route 249 in Yunishigawa, Nikko City. It's in the hot spring enclave of Yunishigawa Onsen, where it's said that the Taira clan fled after defeat in the Genpei War. The museum's exhibits relate to the clan and include armor, kimono, literature, and items from daily life.

    平家の落人伝説がある湯西川の上流にある資料館です。近くの町営駐車場に車を停めて見学しましたが、拝観料500円の割には展示品は貧弱で半分はガラクタかと思うような物でした。明らかに500円は高過ぎます。

    This dam is located along Prefectural Route 23 in Kawaji, Kawajionsen, Nikko City. Completed in 1983, the dam was built along the Kinu River for purposes such as flood control and irrigation. It is the fourth tallest concrete arch dam in Japan. The dam also features a museum with free admission.

    Nikko's preeminent prayer hall for conducting goma fire rituals. It's behind the Nikko-san Sohondo Sanbutsudo, which was built during the Heian period and is the largest wooden structure in eastern Japan. The principal objects of worship are images of the Five Heavenly Kings made in the middle Heian period. The Great Dragon painted on the ceiling was completed over a two-and-a-half-year period by the late Hokusai Yoshihara, who was nationally recognized for his restoration techniques as national designated color preservation selection technology holder. The inner sanctum is a sight to see with its 30 statues of famous priests and Buddhist deities like the Twelve Devas and Seven Lucky Gods, as well as the Five Heavenly Kings. The temple holds scripture copying sessions of the 276 Chinese characters of the Heart Sutra in the second-floor sermon room.

    輪王寺の三仏堂の後方にある朱色のお堂。大護摩堂の並びに建っていました。 かつて毘沙門天、大黒天、弁財天の開運三天が祀られていたそうです。やや地味な雰囲気でしたが国重要文化財に指定されている凄い建物なんですね。

    A temple located in Yumoto, Nikko City. It is a branch temple of Rinnoji Temple on Mt. Nikko, a registered World Heritage site. The origin of this ancient temple is said to date back to 788, when Shodo Shonin, known as the founder of Nikko, discovered hot spring water and enshrined Ruriko-no-Norai, the Medicine Buddha. The temple is also known as one of the few temples in Japan with hot spring facilities on its grounds, and visitors can take a day-trip to the milky white Yakushi-yu hot spring (closed during the winter season).

The plant, which is visited by many tourists, also offers two hands-on tofu making classes per day (limited to 50 people per class).

  • Setoaikyo Canyon

    A two-kilometer-long canyon with walls some 100 meters high which was created via the erosion of tuff rock. Situated along the upper reaches of the Kinu River, visitors can enjoy fantastic, picturesque scenery from the Watarasshai Suspension Bridge spanning the canyon. The canyon is also a renowned destination for fall foliage and, in addition to being visited by numbers of tourists in autumn, it has been selected for inclusion in a list of Tochigi's Best 100.

    This venerable 120 year-old handicraft shop is located in Nikko City, Tochigi Prefecture. Visitors can purchase works of the local traditional handicraft Nikko-bori. This style of woodcarving that originated in Nikko uses a tool called a Hikkaki-gatana. The shop also carries a wide variety of other products including interior goods and stationery. Visitors can also try their hand at Nikko-bori woodcarving (reservation required). The shop is visited by many tourists looking for Nikko souvenirs.
  • The second Irohazaka (Nikko City)

    A National Route toll road located in Nikko City, Tochigi Prefecture. The No. 2 Irohazaka is a dedicated inbound road. The Irohazaka is famous for its 48 curves, total of both the No. 1 and No. 2 roads. In addition, there are facilities along the road such as the Akechidaira Observatory, from which visitors can get a view of the No. 1 Irohazaka and the area's seasonal scenery. A renowned destination for fall foliage, each year in autumn traffic jams along the road are common.

Onsenji Temple, which features attractions such as a day spa, is visited by many locals and tourists alike.
