    Tochigi Pref. Nikkoushi Sannai 2301 Sunlight in Toshogu Shrine
    This museum exhibits artifacts such as the treasures of the enshrined deity Tokugawa Ieyasu, collections of precious objects and offerings from the Imperial court, Shogunate, and the Daimyo families, and festival equipment of the Imperial Palace. A detailed virtual reality video of the Yomei Gate and a program about how Tokugawa governed and ruled the nation are shown in the Toshogu Theater, and there is a café as well the displayed treasures. At this facility, visitors can deeply gain an understanding of Nikko Toshogu and Tokugawa Ieyasu. It is approximately ten minutes by car from “Nikko Interchange” on the Nikko Utsunomiya Road.

    This is a sightseeing spot which is representative of Oku-Nikko and is considered to be one of the three great falls in Nikko. The highlight is the appearance of water running down over the roughly 200 meter expanse of lava rock which formed during the eruption of Mt. Nantai. It is said that the naming of Ryuzu Waterfall (dragon head waterfall) is because the waterfall looks just like a dragon’s head with white bubbles streaming down, and due to the waterfall being split into two by a large rock near to the basin under the waterfall. Between May and June is a particularly popular season when the Rhododendrons are in full bloom.

    Senjogahara Plateau is located in Oku-Nikko which is home to abundant nature, which was formerly a lake but has been transformed into a wetlands, and it is a vast area which is proportionate to the size of 85 Tokyo Domes. The god of Mt. Nantai and the god of Mt. Akagi had a battle here and thus the origin of the name of “Senjo” (battlefield) wetlands. There is a nature exploration route maintained, which you can walk through in about two hours. You can enjoy as many as 350 varieties of plants and numerous birds.
  • Iroha-zaka

    Iroha-zaka refers to a pair of sightseeing roads that connect central Nikko to the higher elevations of Lake Chuzenji and the mountainous Okunikko region. The First Iroha-zaka is used to come down while the Second Iroha-zaka is used to go up. Altogether there are 48 curves on the two roads, and each corner has been named with a letter of the ancient Japanese alphabet, which began with “I,” “Ro,” and “Ha.” There is a spectacular view from the Akechidaira observatory on the Second Iroha-zaka, and in the autumn it is such a popular spot to drive along and see the colorful leaves that traffic can become congested.

    This museum located next to Kegon Falls and Lake Chuzenji features exhibits on subjects such as the natural origins and history of the Okunikko area. The exhibit area is divided into the natural exhibits hall which deals with the area's geography, zoology, etc. and the human exhibit hall which deals with the area's history. The museum also offers serves as an information center for the region that offers information on the area's nature, hiking courses, and other subjects. It also holds nature experiences and other events.

    奥日光の魅力を発信するビジターセンター的な要素のある施設です。 どちらかというと子ども向けの展示が多いようですが、華厳の滝の駐車場からすぐで、奥日光には数少ない室内の施設なので、雨の日にオススメです。 いくつかの動物の剥製や、自然を模した展示、写真による動植物の紹介、13分ほどのシアター、奥日光の地形の紹介、男体山と赤城山の戦いの神話の紹介などの見所があります。

    This aerial tramway is located in Nikko City. It takes passengers from Akechidaira to an observation deck located at an altitude of 1,373 meters in about three minutes. Passengers can view magnificent sweeping views of the steep folding screen-shaped cliffs, numerous mountain ranges, Lake Chuzenji, Kegon Falls, Mt. Nantai, and beyond. During the fall foliage season, the tramway's hours may be moved up or extended.

    This is a magnificent 110 meter long and 70 meter high waterfall which is located at the southern tip of Lake Chuzenji. The highlight is certainly the appearance of the lake all at once flowing over the rock wall at Yudaki falls which was created by a lava flow from Mt. Mitsudake which dammed up the Yukawa River to create Lake Yunoko. It is in the middle of the hiking course heading north from the Senjogahara Plateau and it is convenient to access as there is a bus stop nearby.
  • Kinu-Tateiwa Otsuribashi Suspension Bridge

    This is a 140-meter-long pedestrian suspension bridge which connects the Kinugawa hot spring resort to the Place of Scenic Beauty, “Tateiwa” (lit. Shield Rock). Below the bridge which has a height of about 40 meters, you can see the Kinugawa River, and you can enjoy the mountains which are dyed crimson and yellow during the season of autumn colors. Standing near to the suspension bridge, “Tateiwa” as its name suggests resembles the shape of a shield. It is also known as the “marriage bridge” as it connects the two, both the manly “Tateiwa” which rises up opposite the bridge and the feminine Kinugawa River which leisurely flows past.

    Take the bus from JR Nikko Station, get off at the “Kirifuritaki Iriguchi” bus stop, and walk a further 15 minutes. Kirifuri Falls is considered one of the three most beautiful waterfalls in Nikko together with Urami Falls and Kegon Falls, and has also been selected as one of the 100 most beautiful waterfalls in Japan. Divided into two tiers the upper 25 meters tall and the lower 26 meters, in total this large waterfall is 75 meters tall. The name of the waterfall, meaning “falling mist,” is derived from the fall’s waters dropping onto large boulders, creating a fine mist. The trail leading to the falls’ viewing platform is famous for the beauty of the foliage in the area in autumn, and visitors can enjoy the view of the falls surrounded by colorful fall leaves from late October.

    The Lake Yunoko is a peaceful lake surrounded by mountains on three sides; it was created when the Yukawa River was dammed up by the eruption of Mt. Mitsudake. This is a spot where you can enjoy unspoilt nature with wild birds chirping in the hardwood and coniferous forest. It is also known as a famous spot for trout fishing, and the place is lively with a lot of people fishing during the period when the lake is open for fishing from May to September.

    This shrine on Mt. Nantai near the shore of Lake Chuzenji in Tochigi Prefecture’s Nikko City lies in between the honsha (main shrine) and okumiya (rear shrine) of Futarasan Jinja Shrine. It was established in 784 after Shodo Shonin climbed to the summit of Mt. Nantai. Next to the honden (inner sanctuary) is a path (trailhead) that leads to the okumiya on the mountain’s summit, and the trail is only open from May 5 to October 25. In addition to architectural structures on the premises such as the honden and chumon (central gate), which have been designated as Important Cultural Properties, the Homotsu-kan (treasure hall) also exhibits various treasures that belong to Futarasan Jinja Shrine.

    This art museum can be found along Prefectural Route 247 in Sannai, Nikko City. Hoan Kusugi, an honorary resident of Nikko City, was a prolific painter produced western and Japanese paintings, manga, illustrations, and more. In addition to his works, the collection also contains works by Gizo Yoshizawa, Hiroyuki Saito, Naoto Nakamura, Shunya Akiyama, and others. In addition to planned exhibitions, there are performances and rakugo comedy shows as well.

    There was less than 50 paintings here and you couldnt take photos! Not many of the paintings were by kasugi hoan.

    This sacred spring is located to the rear of the precincts at Futarasan-jinja Shrine. Futara Reisen consists of the Yakushi Reisen spring which flows from a cave on Mt. Korei rising behind the main shrine, as well as Sake-no-Izumi, a spring flowing from the precincts at Takinoo-jinja Shrine toward the Nishishin-en garden. From ancient times it's been thought to relieve eye diseases, as well as rejuvenate youth and impart wisdom. The adjacent Azumaya tearoom offers beverages prepared with the sacred water like matcha green tea, coffee, and amazake (a sweet fermented rice drink). The water is also regarded as being superb for making sake, and prefectural breweries swear by it. Empty bottles are available for purchase to bring some of the water with you.

    神苑の奥まったところにあります。自由にお水を飲んでよいそうで、おいしいお水でした。ひしゃくはありませんが、隣のお店で水を持ち帰るボトルを売っていました。

  • Kanmangafuchi Abyss

    This is a beauty spot which was formed by the lava from Mt. Nantai. A stone statue of Acala is enshrined here which was installed by the high priest Koukai on a large rock on the riverbank. It is said that the name, “Kanman” comes from the last verse of Acala’s mantra. There are a group of about 70 Jizo statues on a cliff upstream on the south bank of the river and since it is said that the number of statues differ each time they are counted, they are called “Ghost Jizo”. The word “kanman” is inscribed in Sanskrit characters on the cliff in the upper stream and is said to have been done by Kobo Daishi.

Most visits to Tochigi revolve around Nikko, a small city home to the spectacular, lavishly decorated Toshogu Shrine and Nikko National Park with its mountains, lakes, waterfalls, onsen, and wild monkeys. Neighboring Oku-Nikko is an extension of the fantastic scenery famous for its autumn leaves, while Tochigi’s capital, Utsunomiya, is the only place in the world where you can find oya stone beautifully exhibited in temples and the Oya History Museum.
