This historic structure is a herring fishery lodge in Obira Town. This structure, an Important Cultural Property (nationally designated) built around 1905, is in the farthest north of all the registered properties in Japan. This large herring fishery lodge is the largest in Hokkaido, housing over 200 workhands at the peak of its operation. The timber structure was built completely from lumber cut from the regional Otodo hills. The building, open to the public, displays valuable historic tools. With a roadside station annexed to the lodge, the area is full of festive visitors around the end of May, when the Nishin Banya Festival is held with various games and events for all.

  • Old Seto House (Seto-tei)

    Hokkaido Wakkanaishi Chuou 4-8-27
Only five minutes from JR Wakkanai Station, Old Seto House (Seto-tei) is a historic inn (ryokan) style architecture built in the Meiji to Taisho eras. The kiritsuma-style red tin roofing with the characteristic crest ornaments tell of the Wakkanai history of that period. The proprietor, Tsunezo Seto, operated a fixed netting herring business from 1921, and later established the Seto Fishing Co., Ltd. The Seto-tei is open to the public. Along with many displayed Wakkanai fishing items, one can enjoy the replicated dinner banquet scene. In the inner garden, open to the public, are sakura trees, the blooms of which can be enjoyed through mid-May. The Seto-tei was the first tangible cultural property registered in Wakkanai, in 2013 (registered name: The Old Seto family residential main house).

Hokkaido Areas

around-area-map

Not just a prefecture but an island of its own, Hokkaido is the most northerly prefecture and island of the Japanese archipelago. Arriving in Hokkaido, which is rural and bursting with breathtaking nature, means entering a world where vast national parks, towering mountains, and natural hot springs can be found at every turn. Come December, these natural splendors freeze over and morph into a winter wonderland.
