This cruise is operated by the Abashiri City Tourist Association, which is located at Roadside Station Ryuhyo-Kaido Abashiri. Its whale, dolphin, and sea bird watching tours run from April to October. Under the skillful guidance of Captain Maeda, there's a high chance you'll encounter whales and dolphins while getting to see the ecology of the thriving Okhotsk Sea up close. The animals you can see change from month to month, and you might even encounter unexpected animals like killer whales. A cruise lasts about 2 hours 30 minutes.

With a blue sky and a flat sea we went on our hunt for whales. On the 3,5 hour trip we saw several orcas after half an hour but after that only dolphins from a distance. I know that the staff can’t...

This roadside station is in Bihoro Town, Abashiri County, Hokkaido. This rest area is on Bihoro pass, with an elevation of 525 meters, giving it a gorgeous view of the area. They have a cafe where you can try Crab Ramen, made with Okhotsk snow crab, and lots of souvenirs like bamboo-grass woven goods, and the pass' famous Ageimo fried potato snacks. There's also an observation room, tourist information space, and many other facilities.

This roadside station is in Ozora Town, Abashiri county. The building commands a view of Lake Abashiri, with hills that bring the horizon up close, making the area a popular photo spot. They have a shop, Honoka, selling local processed farm products ready for eating, and a cafeteria offering dishes made with local shijimi clam powder, as well as souvenir shops and a rest area.

Kaminoko Pond

Kaminoko Pond is a small pond about 220 meters in circumference, with a maximum depth of five meters, which is said to have been formed by underground water from Lake Mashu. The name of Lake Mashu in the Ainu language is “Kintan Kamui Toh” (“Lake of the Mountain God”), so as the pond was believed to derive from underflow water from Lake Mashu, it was named Kaminoko (“Child of the God”) Pond. Despite its small size, around 12,000 tons of water gushes up into the Pond every day. The water temperature remains constant at around 8°C all year round. Kaminoko Pond is very beautiful, with a mysterious blue coloration, and high water clarity that makes it possible to see the bottom of the Pond.

The world’s first drift ice-breaker cruise ship Garinko, began in 1987, was replaced with Garinko 2 in 1997, has a total length of 35 meters and can carry up to 195 passengers. In summer it is also acts as a fishing boat and proves to be a powerful force throughout the year. Because it’s the northernmost sea in Japan this is where you’ll find ice-breakers. You can reach the Garinko by a connecting bus in about twelve minutes from Okhotsk Monbetsu Airport. It takes about three hours by intercity bus from JR Asahikawa Station. They also have plenty of events going on all through the year.

Cape Notoro offers impressive views of the Sea of Okhotsk and the mountains of the Shiretoko Peninsula. As part of the Cape is given over to a pastoral farm run by the city government, every year between mid-May and mid-October there are around 150 cows and horses grazing in the area. Cape Notoro is famous as a good spot for viewing the drifting sea-ice that floats close to shore, and it is also a habitat for seals, which attracts large numbers of tourists.

The New York style table seating is on the first floor while the Japanese style sunken kotatsu (a low table over a hole in the floor) seating is on the second floor, and it is a luxurious location to have dinner next to the Abashiri River lit up by the street lights. You can enjoy Abashiri Wagyu beef, the best in Hokkaido, together with Ryu-hyo Draft, which is Okhotsk Blue low-malt beer made with water from Okhotsk drift ice, and Abashiri Premium Beer.

A native flower garden spreading along a slender dune sandwiched between the Sea of Okhotsk and Lake Tofutsu, along National Route 244. From June to August, you can enjoy an array of about 40 different flowers, and in July the typical flowers of the town such as siberian lilies, beach roses and hemerocallis yezoensi, will be at their best. The most recommended season to visit is from mid-June to late-July when the area is full of colorful flowers.

A museum located in the Bihoro Midori no Mura forest park situated along Prefectural Route 122 in Midori, Bihoro Town, Abashiri County, Hokkaido Prefecture. The museum's standing exhibition consists of three rooms which look at rivers, farming and familiar nature, and coming in contact with art, and the museum displays works of art related to the area and has exhibits on farming and the wildlife of Bihoro, Ainu culture, and the history and pioneering of the region. In addition to special exhibitions, the museum also holds events such as lectures on nature, history, and culture.

From the elevator-equipped, 31-meter-tall lookout, visitors can get a sweeping view of Mombetsu and the Sea of Okhotsk.

This lakeside area on the southern shore of Lake Abashiri in Ozora Town, Abashiri County is home to Japan's largest aquatic plant community. The Asian skunk cabbage and other flowering plants come into their peak viewing season in the spring. There is also a camping ground and visitors can enjoy sailing, canoeing, and digging for freshwater clams in the summer. In the winter, you can enjoy ice fishing for Japanese pond smelt on the frozen lake. The Japanese icefish caught in the lake in the fall are one the area's specialties. The Memanbetsu Sightseeing Summer Festival held in August features a number of events including a fireworks display over the lake.

"This exhibition facility is located on the second floor of Bihoro Station in Shinmachi 3-Chome, Bihoro Town, Abashiri County. It opened in 1988 as an exhibition hall covering topics such as Japanese larch forests and wood. During a recent renovation, wooden play equipment such as a slide and tunnel was installed at the facility, which is now known by the nickname ""kiterasu,"" a portmanteau of ""ki"" (meaning wood or tree) and ""terrace."""

This marine mammal conservation facility is located in Kaiyo-koen, Mombetsu City. Over 20 animals from two types of seal (spotted and ringed seals) are raised here, and there are four outdoor ponds and ten indoor ones. The seals can be observed swimming in the underwater behavior observation room from a large window, and you can interact and feed them, and hear about their behavior in the seal plaza.
