Hokkaido Hakodateshi Suehirochou 8-6

A museum built with the aim of cultivating the next generation of youths in the same spirit as Sakamoto Ryoma located to the Jujigai tram stop. Ryoma made numerous plans to pioneer Ezo, now Hokkaido, starting in 1864. He ultimately never participated in the exploration of the island but his descendants did. The museum displays materials on the Kaientai trading group, the Sakamoto family, and Ryoma's sword as well as letters conveying his pioneer spirit. There's also a shop selling merchandise like folding fans and T-shirts decorated with famous quotes by Ryoma.

Hokkaido Hakodate-shi Motomachi 16-15

This Buddhist temple burned down in 1907 and was rebuilt in 1915 as the first reinforced concrete structure in the country. The temple has been designated a National Important Cultural Property.

東本願寺函館別院とも呼ばれる寺院で、現存する鉄筋コンクリート造りの寺院としては日本最古だそうです。函館の建築物に関しては、大火の影響を受けたものが多いですが、これもその典型的な例だと思います。堂々とした建物でした。

Hakodate has many hills but this particularly steep hill is famous for offering the most beautiful scenery. It is loved as the “Charmy Green Slope” as it was used as a location for a Charmy Green commercial. Once you’ve made it to the top you’ll be overwhelmed by the beautiful road extending out towards the ocean. Part of the hill’s appeal is the different views that can be had during each season. There are also steps and handrails going up to the top of the hill.

The Hakodate Asaichi (Morning Markets) are regarded as the face of Hakodate and it is said that the market began when nearby farmers began selling fruit and vegetables in 1945 after the war. After that the markets were moved several times until settling in the present location in 1956. The markets became even more popular with the addition of shops selling seafood such as crab and salmon with food and drink shops as well. Now about 5,000 people visit the market every day. It is best to visit as early in the morning as you can as popular items are sometimes sold out.

Located in the Todohokke area of Hakodate, Mizunashi kaihin onsen is a natural outdoor bath where there are changes in the water temperature due to the rising and falling of the tide, which is unusual even for Japan. The onsen is submerged at high tide, and you can only bathe at low tide. It is recommended that you check in advance because there are times when it is not possible to bathe due to environmental effects such as weather conditions and high waves. Bathing is free, but swimwear is essential for mixed bathing. Separate changing rooms for men and women are provided.

This is one of many temples such as Jitsugyo-ji Temple and Shomyo-ji Temple, near Hakodate Fishing Port. The temple was originally built in 1633 and relocated once, until being moved to the current location in 1879 due to two fires. Ten of the buildings in the precinct have been dedicated as nationally registered tangible cultural properties. Time flies looking at the lavish and intricate detail of the artistic style and carvings of Edo era craftsmen. Visitors can also see both English and French-style wall fences. Every year in October there is an exhibition of the temple's treasures.

This memorial house, adjacent to Takubokusho Park, has a large number of documents and artifacts on display about the life of Toshizo Hizikata, a patriot from the end of the Edo period. Inside the memorial house, the old sword made by Izuminokami Kanesada (more commonly known as Nosada), and the revolver handgun are must-see items. There are also displays about other loyalists from that time besides Hizikata, and you’ll also find some original goods on sale too.

This museum is located near the Goryokaku Tower, a three-minute walk from the Goryoukaku Koen Iriguchi bus stop, and about seven minutes on foot from the tram stop Goryoukaku Koen-mae and is combined with the Hakodate Performing Arts Center. The exhibition focuses on modern works born in South Hokkaido and a collection of the calligrapher Kaneko Otei can be seen in the Otei Memorial room. Themed special exhibitions and lectures are also held. A family time is set up on Sunday mornings where families with children can casually visit and use discounts for special exhibitions. Original goods are also sold at the museum shop.

Hokkaido Hakodateshi Suehirochou 13-22

This is the museum of Takataya Kahei, a wealthy merchant from Awaji Island. Kahei who was originally a farmer, rapidly made his mark as a seaman with the help of his uncle. Kahei was pioneering in the foundation of Hakodate, developing the sea route between Kunashir Island and Iturup Island and was also attributed to be “The person who contributed to the development of Hakodate”. The museum exhibits a collection of about 500 items related to lifetime of Kahei, and focuses on items related to the ships on the Hakodate (the present Hakodate) to Osaka (the present Osaka) sea route.

赤レンガ倉庫群に隣接した、まるで蔵のようなレトロ感のある建物でした。高田屋嘉兵衛を紹介する説明板も立ち、江戸時代末期の豪商で函館発展の功績者のようでした。赤レンガ倉庫群には多くの観光客が集まっていましたが、資料館方面は素通りしていました。

Hokkaido Hakodateshi Suehirochou 19-15

A museum which presents the era when Western fashions and tastes swept the Hakodate area in the Meiji period. Located a one minute walk from Suehirocho Station on the Hakodate City Tram, the museum operates out of a fireproof brick former Western goods shop mixing Japanese and Western architectural styles built in 1880. The building itself is a rare example of structures from that time which survived a great fire in 1907 and has been designated a Tangible Cultural Property by the government of Hokkaido. Inside, you'll find restorations of the shop's own Meiji period shop floor and reception area, dioramas presenting what the town once looked like; and a rare Swiss music box with mechanical dancing dolls said to be one of only a few examples extant in the world.

A one-minute walk from the Shomyojidori bus stop. Located close to the Old Russian Consulate, this Buddhist temple adjoins the Jitsugyo-ji Temple. Founded in 1644, the temple was moved to its current location in 1881.
