    Hokkaido Otaru-shi
This plaza stands at the center of Otaru Bay, the doorway of Hokkaido's development. There is a tourist information office at the bridge connecting Nichigin-dori Street and the canal. The pictures by which Otaru Canal has become famous nationwide were taken from this bridge. It was once a bridge for the port freight railway, and was built when the canal was only halfway reclaimed. Famous as the most active place on the canal, it's common for visitors to take pictures here against the backdrop of the canal. It's filled with visitors and photographers year round, no matter the season.

This is located on the bridge where everyone is taking pictures of the canal. It was crowded inside and you can get some useful tourist information.

    Hokkaido Otaru-shi Sakaimachi
This five-way intersection is located in Irifune, Otaru City. It is one of Otaru City's most famous sightseeing spots and has the official name of Sakaimachi Intersection. A nightlight and a steam-powered clock have been built here, and the medieval European atmosphere is quite stunning.

Hokkaido Otarushi Temiya - Inside color
A railway line which once connected south Otaru to Temiya Station. The line was originally built as part of the Horonai Railway, the first railway in Hokkaido, during the days of the former Japan National Railways. The railway was primarily used for coal, marine products, and other cargo. Due to the declining number of riders, passenger service was closed in 1962 and cargo transportation on the railway was ended in 1985. Almost the entirety of the railroad tracks is still intact and visitors to the area are free to walk them. The end of the line, the former Temiya Station, has been turned into the Otaru City General Museum where you can view the old railway turntable and examples of real trains once used here.

Hokkaido Areas

around-area-map

Not just a prefecture but an island of its own, Hokkaido is the most northerly prefecture and island of the Japanese archipelago. Arriving in Hokkaido, which is rural and bursting with breathtaking nature, means entering a world where vast national parks, towering mountains, and natural hot springs can be found at every turn. Come December, these natural splendors freeze over and morph into a winter wonderland.
