    Shizuoka Kakegawa-shi Nishiobuchi 5298-2
This home and garden is about a three-minute walk from both the Nishibancho bus stop and the Shinyokosuka bus stop or about a 20-minute drive from Kakegawa Interchange. It is located on the left heading east from Yokosuka Castle Ruin Park via Prefectural Route 41 and Prefectural Route 69. The home was built as the residence of the Shimizu family, which made its fortune as Kaisen donya shipping agents during the Edo period. The family even served as purveyors for the region's feudal lords. The home's kaiyu-shiki garden is believed to have been completed during the mid Edo period. The beauty of the extremely clear spring water in the garden's central pond earned it a spot on the list of Shizuoka Prefecture's 100 best waterfronts in 2001.

    園内を散策しましたが整備されていて見た目もよく池も庭もとても綺麗でした。茶店のお茶もおいしかったです。

The site of a former samurai residence located in Chiran-cho, Kagoshima Prefecture. Amongst the group of samurai residences in Chiran, which frequently sport dry rock “waterfalls,” this garden is the only one which makes abundant use of water and which is built around a central pond. The pond forms a beautifully curving arc, while the garden’s foreground makes use of lanterns and stone to represent peninsulas and mountains. Further in, a stunningly formed boulder with a hole in its center is used to represent a cavern. Other intriguingly shaped rocks and greenery are arranged at the back of the pond to frame the beautiful mountains in the distance.

Daiunzan Kokokuji belongs to the Myoshinji school of Rinzai Zen Buddhism. It's about a five-minute drive from Tabushi station on the Ichibata Electric Railway. The temple was built in 1322 by the Zen priest Koho Kakumyo with contributions from the Yasukuni clan who ruled locally. The rock garden to the north of the study was created from the middle to late Edo period. It is a quaint garden that incorporates the scenery of the reservoir at Mt. Tabushi and a traditional dry landscape garden characteristic of Zen temples. Trees growing around the pond give the viewer even more of a sense of brightness and grandeur. The garden has appeared time and again in the American publication Journal of Japanese Gardening.

    Ishikawa Hakui-gun Shikamachi Machi 30-63
A garden considered to represent Noto’s gardening culture. Members of the mighty Taira family once served as the headsmen of 13 villages under the direct control of the Tokugawa shogunate government. The family is said to have descended from the chief vassal of the Hatakeyama clan, whose members served as the governors of Noto Province, and they possessed a vast, 20,000-square-meter estate. This famous shoin-style garden was designed for enjoying the view of a central pond from the estate and was built in the mid-Edo period and bears aspects of both Muromachi period and Edo period gardening styles. One of the most celebrated private house Japanese gardens in the Noto area, it has been designated a Prefectural Place of Scenic Beauty due to its excellently preserved condition.

"Legend says San'in's oldest garden was visited by Emperor Go-Daigo when he was exiled to the Oki Islands at the fall of the Kamakura shogunate. It's one of only two early Edo period ""crane and tortoise"" gardens left in the country, the other being at Kyoto's Saihojji Temple, also known as the moss temple. The small ornamental pond style garden has a bit of a Horai Garden feel. Designed after natural scenery, the pond has an island representing ""Shinsen Island"" as a prayer for prosperity. Designs that became formalized in the Edo period can be seen throughout the garden; it has been registered as a National Site of Scenic Beauty. Be sure to call in advance before visiting."

A Rinzai Zen Buddhist temple that is counted among of the oldest Zen temples in the Izumo region. It was founded in 1322 by the priest Koho Kakumyo who had earned the trust of Emperor Godaigo and Emperor Gomurakami. The precious large shikyakumon four-pillared gate at the end of the pine tree lined approach dates from the 1300s and escaped fires, helping it survive to the present day. The precincts are also home to one of the prefecture's few Korean bells. The temple is also a popular spot for viewing azaleas; the site of hundreds of them blooming together is superb.
