    Hyogo Pref. Toyokashi Kinosakichouyushima 415-1
The name (meaning “the Best Hot Spring”) of this historic hot spring bath facility is derived from the Yakusen, a book written by mid-Edo period doctor Kagawa Shutoku, who wrote that it was the best hot spring bath in the world. The Yumepa bath ticket allows purchasers to visit bathe as much as they like at seven different hot spring facilities, including Ichinoyu, whose waters have are said to bring good fortune. The facility is famous for its rock cavern bath, which was naturally carved out of the bare mountain and whose water quality is said to be the best in the country. The magnificent building, reminiscent of a Momoyama-style kabuki theater, has become a symbol of the Kinosaki Onsen area.

This is the onsen with the outdoor cave pool. It’s pretty cool to soak in a mock cave but I actually preferred the indoor pool and the jets.... plus the indoor pool is a degree or so hotter. Both...

  • Noboribetsu Onsen
    Accommodations / Hot Spring
    Hokkaido Noboribetsu-shi Noboribetsuonsencho
This hot spring area, one of the country’s foremost, is blessed with an abundance of high quality hot spring waters. There are nine varieties of source springs found in the area, each with its own coloration and purported health benefits, including sulfur springs, chloride springs, alum springs, sulfate springs, melanterite springs, iron springs, acidic springs, alkaline springs, and radium springs. In the indigenous Ainu language, “nupur pet” means “white, cloudy river” or “dark colored river;” believed to be the phrase from which the Japanese place name “Noboribetsu” is derived. It also alludes to the area’s abundance of hot water, which is so great that it even changes the color of the river. Many people come here to enjoy the area’s distinctive and atmospheric hot spring hotels and inns, and to enjoy a day trip spent sampling different bathhouses. The area offers plenty of opportunities for sightseeing, including picturesque Noboribetsu Jigokudani (Hell Valley), Oyunuma Pond, and Tessen Pond, plus destinations like famous scenery, historic sites, and theme parks.

This facility is at the center of the Kusatsu Onsen resort and regulates the temperature of the water as well as acquires samples of the flowers that bloom in the area. The nearly 32,300 liters of water gushing every minute have come to symbolize the resort. You’ll find a walkway and benches set up around the area, perfect for a stroll after a dip in the springs. The area is illuminated at night, creating a totally different atmosphere. In winter, you can enjoy events such as the “Kusatsu Onsen Yubatake Illumination” and the “Yubatake Special Lightup.”

The underground wine cave offers brands of wines that have passed the wine quality screening organized by the city. In addition to wine tastings, the facility also offers an area where guests can enjoy wine as part of a meal or a barbeque. The hot springs spa featuring views of Southern Japan Alps, the Kofu Basin, and the Misaka Mountains is also popular.

Visitors to this municipal hot spring facility can enjoy a steam bath which involves wearing a robe and lying in a stone hut blanketed with medicinal plants as hot spring steam warms their entire body. The facility was remodeled in 2006 but its history is ancient, having been established by the Buddhist priest Ippen in 1276 and thereafter coming to be known as a health spa. The facility also features an indoor bath where you can wash away the sweat from the steam bath, and an outdoor foot bath which is free to all.

This was a new experience for me. You first go onsen, and then you go to a small room and stay there for 8 min. It was not like a sauna, this was more comfortable. And the onsen was also clean and...

    Tokyo Nishitamagunhinodemachi Oguno 4718
A day trip hot spring bath facility opened in 1996 in Hinode Town, Nishitama County, Tokyo. “Tsurutsuru” means ‘smooth’ in Japanese, and just as its name implies, the highly alkaline waters of the facility’s baths, drawn from 1,500 meters below the ground, will make your skin noticeably smoother. In the bathhouse’s spacious, 108 tatami mat-sized “panorama” restaurant, sunlight filters in between the trees outdoors through large windows; here you can enjoy a set which comes with Akigawa beef served on a Japanese hackberry leaf or Masakado nabe hotpot with Ome pork.

Kitagawa Onsen, Higashiizu-cho, Kamo-gun, Shizuoka Prefecture
Located on the coast in Shizuoka Prefecture’s Kamo County, Higashiizu Town, this is a publicly managed open-air bath right on the edge of the ocean. Just as its catch phrase of “bathing in an open-air bath while looking at America” implies, the view is outstanding. One can enjoy bathing with the ocean at eye level, and it is a popular spot that attracts hot spring lovers from all over the country. One of the three bathtubs is exclusively for women, and it is possible to enter the bath while wearing a bath towel. From 7 p.m. to 9 p.m. all of the baths are women-only.

I spoke with the proprietors. In the past year (2018) the baths have been redone such that there is a permanent womens bath and mens bath, both opening to the sea. As such, this is not a mixed...

Visitors can enjoy two baths, Ki-no-Yu and Seki-no-Yu, which are each fed by two springs, the Yubatake and Bandai sources, and which alternate each day for men and women. Gozanoyu is a public bath reconstructed around the historical yubatake from the Edo to Meiji periods.

This lodging facility in Yufuin, Oita Prefecture has select shops, restaurants and bars. It has the concept of doing all they can to satisfy customers and to value all encounters. The guest rooms are also distinctive and many are in renovated kominka (old houses) from the Meiji period (1868-1912) and Showa period (1926-1989). The facility offers a select menu of dishes with the most delicious seasonal ingredients. Its appeal is the ability to spend time surrounded by nature in the remote Yufuin basin. In addition, there is also good access to nearby tourist attractions and leisure facilities.

This is a city-managed day trip bathing facility in the Arima Onsen area, famous as a place loved by chancellor Toyotomi Hideyoshi. It is located in a quiet spot a little removed from the town and surrounded by many temples and shrines. The building is rich with Japanese-style onsen atmosphere, and inside one can enjoy Arima’s famous carbonated radium hot spring Ginsen. The nearest station is Arima Onsen Station. At the Tansan Sengen Koen park just a five-minute walk away, there is a place where one can drink carbonated spring water.

The third of the Dogo Onsen bathhouses after Dogo Onsen Tsubaki-no-Yu. The bathhouse is built to encapsulate the concept of Asuka period architecture including ornamental ridge end rooftiles resembling historical structures such as Nara's Todaiji temple and a vivid outward appearance of contrasting red and white to draw the eye. This day hot spring facility is located three minutes away from the Habikino Interchange. It is a healing space with highly unique baths and saunas designed to make you feel like you are surrounded by nature. There are six main rotenburo open-air baths, and you can enjoy their health effects at three different temperatures. The most popular one is luxurious natural hot spring where you can freely use source water that gushes directly from underground. In addition, there are a rich number of varieties including iwaburo (onsen made of rocks) and kosoburo (onsen with fragrant grasses and herbs). There are three kinds of saunas, and the Yakuseki Hanjunbo is recommended. Using ten types of yakuseki (medicinal elements) such as germanium and rock salt, it has a detox effect.

KamigataOnsenIkkyu is a hot spring facility for day use, just a two-minute walk from the NishijimaGochome bus stop, a rather convenient location for visitors to Universal Studios Japan. The water Is piped in directly from a simple hot spring with a low alkaline level in the city, and it boasts a number one ranking from an MBS Network television program about hot spring facilities in Kansai. The facility also contains a restaurant that serves authentic Japanese, Western, and Chinese cuisine, a rest area with tatami mats where guests can relax after bathing, and even a feature rare in hot spring facilities, a hair salon.
