The 11.3 meter tall, 121 ton giant copper Buddha statue known as the Kamakura Daibutsu, a National Treasure, is the temple’s principal object of worship and depicts a seated Amitabha. The original daibutsu was made of wood and was destroyed by a typhoon. The copper form of the current statue first began to be cast in 1252. This figure, too, was damaged by typhoons and earthquakes but was repaired each time, leading to its current excellent condition. The interior of the statue can be viewed and from here visitors can see evidence of the repairs that have been made.

Structures such as the castle tower built in the early Edo period still stand today, and these are also registered as National treasures and national Important Cultural Properties. One of the most prominent theories is that the castle was originally erected as a fort by Akamatsu Sadanori in 1346. Ikeda Terumasa began renovating the castle when he became the lord of the castle after the Battle of Sekigahara, expanding it into the expansive compound seen today. The castle tower is located in the southeast corner of the foundation. The castle looks to be composed of five tiers from the outside and internally is comprised of six floors above ground and one subterranean level. The castle shining a blinding white in the light of the sun is truly a beautiful sight.

The temple was founded in 1339 by Ashikaga Takauji to memorialize Emperor Go-Daigo. The temple was founded as the first of the five Kyoto Gozan premier temples and the spacious grounds encompassed over 150 sub-temples, but these were all lost in a series of later fires. The various temple buildings standing today were reconstructed in the Meiji period; the abbot’s chamber enshrines a seated figure of Gautama Buddha created in the Fujiwara period. The temple’s circular garden, built around a central pond, is a designated Historic Site and Special Place of Scenic Beauty and makes use of Mt. Arashiyama and Mt. Kameyama in the background. The garden looks the same as it did approximately 700 years ago when it was first created by Muso Kokushi.

The traditional townhomes along the street have had modern touches added onto them, and the street is dotted with old-fashioned mom-and-pop businesses and private homes, as well as retro-modern lodging facilities, shops, and galleries. Itsukushima Shine’s magnificent five-story pagoda stands at the end of the street. Today, the street is primarily used by local residents as part of everyday life. At night, the street is illuminated by the light of paper lanterns installed under the eaves of the various establishments along its length, engendering a romantic atmosphere quite different from how the street feels in the daytime.

- (Provided by service)This five-tier red pagoda stands on a hill near the Honden front shrine of Itsukushima Shrine. The 27.6-meter-tall tower is located next to Toyokuni Shrine (location of the Senjokaku Pavilion). Skillfully blending Japanese and Chinese design aspects, the tower was built in 1407. Inside, the ceiling is painted with a dragon, while outside the ceilings have been painted with grapevine scrollwork and vivid patterns. The pagoda’s central pillar notably only extends up to the second tier in a design which helps prevent the tower from being toppled by strong winds. The pagoda used to enshrine the temple’s principal object of worship, a statue of Gautama Buddha; as well as statues of the bodhisattvas Samantabhadra and Manjushri, but these were moved to the Daiganji Temple on the opposite shore during the anti-Buddhism movement of the Meiji period. Today, the pagoda has been designated a National Important Cultural Property.

The castle was built on a magnificent scale, but was destroyed just 17 years later after the death of Toyotomi Hideyoshi and the destruction of the Toyotomi clan in the Siege of Osaka in 1615. Thereafter, the castle was rebuilt by the Tokugawa shogunate under the command of Todo Takatora but was once again lost due to a fire caused by a lightning strike. The current castle tower is the third generation to stand here and was completed in 1931 through donations from local citizens. The interior of the castle is a history museum and visitors can enjoy information about the history of Osaka Castle and dioramas. The castle was registered as a national Tangible Cultural Property in 1997.

- 11:02
- 30min
- (Provided by service)"This market is held every morning on the roadside in Shimo-sanno-machi, Takayama City, along the Miya River. The market evolved out of a rice market, mulberry leaf market and flower market held in the area in the Edo period (1603-1868); by the middle part of the Meiji period (1868-1912), it had evolved into a ""Morning Market"" in which vegetables were laid out for sale. Today, a range of local specialty products-including vegetables such as Hida spring onions and waxy corn, which are traditional foods in the Hida region, as well as Mitarashi Dango rice-dumplings, which are marinated in soy sauce repeatedly before cooking, and which, unlike most Dango, are not sweet-can be found together crowded together. The Miyagawa Morning Market is ranked as one of the top three best morning markets in Japan, and has become one of Takayama City's major tourist attractions."

The purpose of direct jurisdiction was access to the abundant timber and underground resources. After the Meiji Restoration, this building was also used as the Takayama prefectural government building. In order to conserve Takayama Jinya, 16 years of repair and reconstruction work were undertaken and were completed in 1996. There were 60 regional headquarters and sub-headquarters nationwide at the end of the Edo period, but the Takayama Jinya is the only building left in existence today. Takayama Jinya has been certified with two stars in the Michelin Green Guide Japan.

- (Provided by service)Omicho Market in Kanazawa City, Ishikawa Prefecture has been nicknamed “Kanazawa’s Kitchen.” The Market has rows of retail shops selling food products (mainly fresh foods) and miscellaneous daily necessaries; it has underpinned Kanazawa’s gastronomic culture for nearly 300 years, since the Edo period. Fruit juices in which the straw is stuck straight into the fruit, and Kaisen Don (a bowl of rice topped with seafood) with plenty of delicious, fresh seafood toppings are particularly popular with tourists. The 13.7 meter high gate is modeled after a shirabeo drum used in traditional Kaga hosho music. In contrast with the glass and aluminum dome extending from the station to the gate, the gate itself is made of wood, evoking the history and traditions of the area. The beautiful spiraling pillars and gently curving latticework roof are also functional, concealing exhaust towers connected beneath the plaza.

The area flourished as a pleasure quarter from the Meiji era to before the war and still today is a town of many town houses with latticed windows and cobblestones. There are a variety of Japanese restaurants and tea houses, as well as café bars reusing the old town houses and at dusk visitors can hear the sounds of shamisen coming from the houses. This is the town that became the stage of Hiroyuki Itsuki’s novel, and there are many spots related to the literary master Kyoka Izumi who was born in neighboring Shimoshin Town.

- (Provided by service)Kenrokuen is a traditional Japanese-style garden in Kanazawa City, Ishikawa Prefecture. The garden is said to have been first constructed in the mid-17th century in the outer bailey of Kanazawa Castle as a private garden for the lords of the Kaga Domain; it has been designated as a National Special Place of Scenic Beauty, and it ranks alongside the Kairakuen garden in Mito and the Korakuen garden in Okayama as one of the “Three Great Gardens of Japan.” Kenrokuen is renowned for its beautiful vistas, which make effective use of how nature changes with the seasons. For example, a special feature of the garden during the winter months is the Yuki-tsuri (ropes attached in a conical array to protect tree branches in a garden during the winter); another seasonal feature is the red and white plum blossom in the plum grove. In 2009 the Kenrokuen garden was awarded three stars (the maximum possible) in the Michelin Green Guide. During the peak tourist season, there is free…

- Shinkyo Bridge
- 15:11
- 30min
- (Provided by service)The Shinkyo Bridge is a beautiful bridge that hangs at the entrance into the mountains of Nikko, and is a structure which belongs to Futarasan Shrine. At the end of the Nara period, on the occasion of Shodo Shonin founding a temple, he sought divine assistance from gods and Buddhas as he was blocked from crossing the Daiya River. Thereupon, Jinja-ou (the God of the River) had appeared and released two snakes. Legend has it that mountain sedge sprouted from the backs of those two snakes and they turned into a bridge which is the Shinkyo Bridge. The bridge was built in its current vermillion-lacquered form in 1636. Thereafter, it was washed away by a flood, but it was rebuilt in 1904. It is an Important Cultural Property of Japan and it was also registered as a World Heritage site in 1999. The Shinkyo bridge is regarded as one of the three most eccentric bridges in Japan.

Glaring from the left and right of the vermilion toned structure, their bright colors contrast with the subdued tones of the gate. It is said that this is where the term ""A-Un Breathing"" comes from, which describes two people functioning together so well it's as if they were joined by their breath."

The highlight is the appearance of water running down over the roughly 200 meter expanse of lava rock which formed during the eruption of Mt. Nantai. It is said that the naming of Ryuzu Waterfall (dragon head waterfall) is because the waterfall looks just like a dragon’s head with white bubbles streaming down, and due to the waterfall being split into two by a large rock near to the basin under the waterfall. Between May and June is a particularly popular season when the Rhododendrons are in full bloom.
