  • Asahidake Onsen
    Hokkaido Kamikawa-gun Higashi-kawacho Asahidake Onsen
    This hot spring district is located inside Daisetsuzan National Park at the foot of Mt. Asahi-dake, the highest peak of the Daisetsuzan Volcanic Group, and is the oldest hot spring district in Hokkaido. Asahi-dake is 2,291 meters tall and has been selected as one of Japan's 100 most famous mountains; the seasonal beauty of this peak is breathtaking. There are nine hot spring hotels in the area which have been erected in locations which take advantage of this magnificent scenery, but unlike many hot spring districts in Japan, there is no real town area to speak of. In other words, visitors are free to enjoy lush natural beauty enwrapped in a quiet and relaxing atmosphere. There are cross-country skiing courses here available for use from November to May and places which rent equipment; beginners are recommended to take a relaxing soak to ease sore muscles after trying the sport. It is said that the food in Higashikawa Town is grown with spring water, and the area's rice, fresh vegetables, and liquors are all superbly delicious.

  • Tokachigawa Onsen
    Hokkaido Kato-gun Otofukecho Tokachigawa Onsen
    A hot spring district designated a Hokkaido Heritage Site which boasts moor hot springs, a type of hot spring only found in a few places around the world. A moor hot spring is one in which plant-derived organic matter has dissolved into its waters; moor hot springs are characterized by their dark reddish and yellowish brown color and smooth, slippery feel. Gentle on the skin, the area's hot spring waters contain an abundance of natural moisturizing substances and are called a natural skin lotion by some. The area is host to simple springs and chloride springs, each bearing slightly differing properties depending on facility and location, but they are all said to have powerful skin beautifying properties and this hot spring village is accordingly particularly popular with women.

  • Mori no Spa Resort Hokkaido Hotel Onsen
    Hokkaido Obihiro-shi Nishi 7 Jominami 19-1
    A bathhouse fed by a moor hot spring-a spring into which have dissolved the organic acids humic acid and fulvic acid, generated by the process involved in plant matter buried in the ground changing into coal, giving its waters a smooth, velvety feel. The spring, located on the grounds of the Hokkaido Hotel, is renowned for its beautifying properties. The organic acid-rich waters are said to treat nerve pain, muscle soreness, and joint pain. The facility has an indoor bath an outdoor bath, bedrock bath, regular sauna, and private reservable bath. Located close to the center of Obihiro City, just a five minute drive from JR Obihiro Station, the hotel is surrounded by beautiful forest and offers convenient access to nearby sightseeing destinations. The hotel's daily fresh-baked bread is also popular.

  • Niseko Goshiki Onsen
    Hokkaido Abuta-gun Niseko Cho Niseko
    Situated 750 meters above sea level among the Niseko Mountains, visitors to this hot spring inn can enjoy the beauty of alpine plants and vast, natural scenery. Goshiki means five colors, a reference to the fact that, unlike a standard hot spring, where one might find at most two different types of springs, here the waters of five different sulfur springs mix and merge, resulting in five different water colors depending on the day. The inn's acidic sulfur-containing magnesium sodium calcium sulfate chloride spring (hydrogen sulfate) waters have a slippery feel and are gentle on the skin. The inn's bathhouse is open to non-guests, as well, but not that in the winter the road may be closed due to heavy snows, so it is best to check in advance.

  • Nukabira Gensen Go
    Hokkaido Kato-gun Kamishihoro Cho Nukabira Gensen Go
    A hot spring district located in Kamishihoro Town, itself situated at the foot of the eastern mountains of Japan's largest national park, Daisetsuzan National Park. Nukabira means person-shaped rock in the indigenous Ainu language. Here visitors can take in the magnificent natural scenery created by a range of 2,000 meter tall mountains. The history of this hot spring district dates back to the early Taisho period, and the abundant volume of piping hot water it generates is utilized to constantly replenish the waters of hot spring baths here kakenagashi style. In the time when there were no ski slopes or rail lines, the district prospered as the leading hot spring destination in the Doto area. The temperature of the area's colorless sodium-chloride and hydrogen carbonate springs (alkaline springs) ranges somewhat high, between 50 and 60° C. Because this area is situated on ground higher than the more urban parts of Hokkaido, in winter the temperature drops precipitously, making the hot springs found here an indispensable natural blessing.

  • Yoroushi Onsen
    Hokkaido Shibetsu-gun Nakashibetsu Cho Yoroushi Onsen
    A secluded hot spring district located deep in the woods 27 kilometers from the center of Nakashibetsu Town. The hot springs here were used by the indigenous Ainu people 400 years ago and were developed as a hot spring resort destination 100 years ago. The outdoor baths here are particularly renowned. The waters of the area's sulfur-containing common salt springs are said to treat rheumatic diseases, movement disorders, wounds, chronic eczema, and keratosis, in addition to strengthening children with weak constitutions. The district has two hot spring lodging facilities as well as a free mixed bathing outdoor bath situated a little ways away. Surrounded by natural beauty, rare wild animals can also occasionally be spotted here. Surrounding attractions include gorgeous Yoro Falls situated along the Moshibetsu River, a tributary of the Shibetsu River; the Kaiyodai Observatory, which boasts a 330 degree panoramic view of the area; and Lake Mashu, which has been designated a Hokkaido Heritage Site.

  • Tokachi Take Onsen

    Hokkaido Sorachi-gun Kamifurano Cho Tokachi Take Onsen
    Located in the highest area in Hokkaido, this hot spring is also often used as a base for climbing Mt. Tokachidake, a mountain which rises to over 2,000 meters above sea level. Mt. Tokachidake is also an active volcano, but visitors can still enjoy casual mountain climbing here, and the mountain is particularly renowned for the beauty of its fall foliage. The district has two springs-colorless Spring No. 1 and reddish-brown Spring No. 2. Spring No. 1 is an acidic iron-containing aluminum calcium sulfate spring. Its waters contain melanterite, a powerful antibacterial substance, and its waters are said to treat cuts, skin diseases, and athlete's foot. Spring No. 2 is a calcium sodium sulfate spring, and its waters are said and its waters contain substances said to have a calming effect in addition to treating high blood pressure and rheumatism. Outdoor baths in the district offer views of the area's superb scenery; the fall foliage and the frost covered trees in winter, in particular, are not to be missed.

  • Kitayuzawa Onsen
    Hokkaido Date-shi Otaki-ku Kitayuzawaonsencho
    A quiet hot spring district commanding a view of the Osaru River valley situated between Lake Shikotsu and Lake Toya. The district's hot springs were discovered in 1897. Visitors will find hotels, ryokan inns, and minshuku bed and breakfasts situated along the river. The bed of the Osaru River consists of exposed green tuff created by the accumulation volcanic ash; its coloring has led to it gaining the nickname the White Silk Bed and becoming a tourist destination in its own right. The waters of the area's sulfur springs are said to treat such ailments as atopic dermatitis, psoriasis vulgaris, chronic eczema, epidermal suppuration, chronic muscle and joint pain, stiffness, light asthma, and pulmonary emphysema. Visitors are also encouraged to make their way to Sangaitaki Park to see Sangaitaki Waterfall, a beautiful waterfall which crashes down a large chunk of bedrock broken up into three tiers. The area is also lovely during the fall foliage season.

  • Kamisunagawadake Onsen

    The waters of this hot spring, Kamisunagawadake-onsen, located in Kamisunagawa Town southwest of Asahikawa City, can be enjoyed at the Panke no Yu hotel standing at the foot of Goryoyama. The hotel was established in 1970; its bathing facilities are also open to non-guests. The waters of the sodium hydrocarbonate saline cold mineral spring are said to treat some 17 ailments, including nerve pain, muscle soreness, joint pain, frozen shoulders, motor paralysis, joint stiffness, bruises, sprains, and sensitivity to cold. The Kamisunagawadake Nihon Teien, a 20 thousand square meter Japanese garden where visitors can enjoy highly seasonal natural beauty, is located nearby. Garden sights include beautiful garden rocks, a three tier waterfall, zigzagging bridges, arbors, and the wild bird bridge, a 40 meter long bridge from which you can hear the calls of some 18 bird species, and visitors can be soothed by the garden's scenery and the songs of birds.

    This hot spring, located on the grounds of Roadside Station Hot Haboro in Hokkaido, is owned and operated by Haboro Onsen Sunset Plaza, a hotel which also has its own souvenir store and restaurants. The waters of the sodium chloride high saline spring are said to treat such ailments as nerve pain, joint pain, muscle soreness, women's diseases, skin diseases, and sensitivity to cold. The hotel's bathing facilities are open to non-guests as well. Haboro Town is known for its beautiful sunsets on the Sea of Japan, and there are an abundance of sightseeing destinations where visitors can come in contact with local history and culture, such as the Haboro Rose Garden, the Asahi Park Japanese iris garden, the Hokkaido Seabird Center, and the site of the former Haboro Coal Mine. The magnificent beauty and vast vistas of the islands of Teuri and Yagishiri are also located a one hour ferry boat ride away (35 minutes by express boat).
