"This park was built on the site of Takanabe Castle, which was known as Maizuru (""Dancing Crane"") Castle because of the resemblance of the local terrain to a crane taking flight. The castle originally belonged to the Tsuchimochi clan in the mid-Heian period; it was then utilized by the Ito clan as one of the 48 Castles of Ito. The castle was next owned by the Shimazu clan after they became the rulers of Kyushu; and then the Akizuki clan, whose members served as the lords of the castle until the abolition of the domain system in the Meiji period. The park grounds have been planted with some 100 plum trees and 1,000 cherry trees, as well as 2,000 azalea plans, and it is known as one of the top destinations for flower viewing in the town. Serving as a space for rest and relaxation, the park bustles with numerous visitors come to take in the flowers from spring to early summer."

An unmissable highlight of Kyushu, Miyazaki prefecture satisfies nature lovers with its dramatic gorges cut out of rugged cliffs, leading into waterfalls and beaches of green-blue water popular among surfers. Takachiho Gorge in the north of the prefecture tells a tale of centuries-old Japanese mythology in a fantastic setting, allowing visitors to explore the waters by boat before heading up to the cave at the Awano Iwato Shrine, where the sun goddess was said to have hidden, plunging the world into darkness.
