    Miyazaki Nishiusuki-gun Gokase Cho Kuraoka
This erosional valley was formed when lava flowed in a belt shape and rapidly cooled during two of Mt. Ado's volcanic eruptions in the distant past. The valley is famous for its beautiful, vivid fall foliage which is produced by the area's high elevation and cold climate. The 60-meter-high Shirataki Waterfall is located nearby, and in the autumn visitors can enjoy the beautiful contrast of the foliage with the spray of the falls.

This valley, situated along the upper reaches of the Hinokage River, consists of a continuous, 24-kilometer-long stretch of picturesque scenery interweaving pure mountain waters and beautiful rock formations created via countless years of erosion. The valley is a popular destination visited by large numbers of people from across the prefecture and beyond enjoying scenic driving in the area. Also known as one of the top spots for fall foliage viewing in the prefecture, the brocade of colorful leaves on the trees along the river is a truly breathtaking sight. A walking course is maintained in the area, making it easy for visitors to enjoy fresh greenery in the spring, stream activities in the summer, fall foliage in the autumn, and frost-covered trees in the winter.
