Oita Kusu-gun Kokonoemachi Tano

A highland area located in Tano, Kokonoe Town, Kusu County, Oita Prefecture. Situated inside Aso Kuju National Park, the area serves as a trailhead for climbing the Kuju Mountain Range and is also a lush natural destination in its own right, encompassing such naturally beautiful places as the Ramsar Convention on Wetlands-registered Tadewara Wetlands. Other area highlights include the Yamanami Highway, a scenic driving route from which you can take in the highland's beauty; a cross country running course; trekking course; tourism farm; and several hot spring bathhouses.

A trip to Oita is tantamount to a long soak in the Beppu baths. The mountainous, coastal prefecture of Oita is renowned for having more onsen than any other prefecture in Japan, most of which lie in the city of Beppu on the west coast of Kyushu, recognizable by its pungent sulphuric aroma and the clouds of steam that puff up across the hillside.
