    Located at an altitude of over 1,000 meters, the Shiga Highlands occupy the bulk of the central area of Joshin’etsu-kogen National Park. This resort area features lakes, marshes, and bogs of all sizes, and you can enjoy physical activities such as trekking in summer and skiing in winter. The rich natural scenery is intimately intertwined with people’s lives, and in fact, this area has been designated a Biosphere Reserve by UNESCO.

The mountain top Utsukushi-ga-Hara Highlands has trails and hiking paths so you can fully enjoy the magnificent nature and fresh air.
  • Kirigamine Highlands

    Selected as one of the top 100 famous mountains in Japan, Kirigamine Highlands, at approximately 1,600 meters above sea level, extends 10 kilometers east to west and 15 kilometers north to south. In early summer the azaleas and daylilies are at their best, and from summer through to autumn you’ll find fireweed and silver grass in bloom. Lots of alpine plants can be spotted in these grassy meadows and visitors can get views of Mt. Fuji and the Yatsugatake Mountains from this popular scenic spot.
  • Norikura Highlands

    A highland located east of Mt. Norikura in Azumi, Matsumoto City. A popular mountain tourism destination, facilities such as hotels and motor home campgrounds can be found in the area, as well as a large number of walking paths. Events such as Mt. Norikura sunrise bus tours and starlight tours are also held in the area.
  • Kurumayama-kogen Highland

    This is a beautiful highland that spreads out around Mt. Kuruma, the highest peak in the Kirigamine Mountain Range, where around 600 types of alpine plants grow. The view from Mt. Kuruma’s summit is exquisite, overlooking the Southern Alps (Akaishi Mountains), Mt. Fuji, Mt. Yatsugatake and the Asama Mountain Range. In summer one can enjoy hiking or trekking, and in winter skiing.
  • Shirabiso Highlands

    You can see the Southern Alps, Northern Alps, and Chuo Alps from these mountains, which have an altitude of 1,918 meters; in fact, they’re called the “Alps Observation site.” There are hiking and trekking courses in the area as well as an auto camp site, offering plenty of outdoor activities. The newly blooming plants, changing of the leaves, and sunset are all gorgeous, making this a popular driving destination.

  • Tateshina Highland

Situated in an area over 1,000 meters above sea level on average and surrounded by lush natural beauty, the highland remains cool even in the summer and is a great destination to escape the heat.     A highland sprawling at the foot of Mt. Mitake along the Nakasendo Highway in Kaidakogen Suekawa, Kiso Town, Kiso County. A naturally lush and beautiful area with a picturesque view of Mt. Mitake, even in summer the average temperature is around 18°C and the area is a great place to enjoy the outdoors while escaping the heat of lower lying areas. A variety of activity facilities are located in the area, including Kisouma no Sato, a horse ranch which raises native Kiso horses; museums; and local culture centers, in addition to restaurants, hot spring inns, and bed and breakfasts.
  • Tsugaike Nature Park

    A nature park situated inside Chubu Sangaku National Park which encloses one of Japan’s best high moors, which extends across a 2,000 meter tall mountain. The park is also renowned for its blooming flowers and fall colors. Alpine plants such as Asian skunk cabbage, Japanese wood poppy, and Dryas pentapetala can be found in the park, which flower beautifully from June to August. The park is outfitted with approximately 5.5 kilometers of wooden footpaths for visitors to take leisurely strolls on.
  • Okususobana Nature Garden

    This nature garden is located in Nagano City. It is known as a famous spot for experiencing nature where you can see beech virgin forests and colonies of skunk cabbage at the headwaters of the Susobana River. There is a promenade in the park where you can enjoy a two to four-hour stroll. The park is open from April until around October and is closed in the winter.
  • Akasawa Natural Recreational Forest

    Known as the birthplace of forest bathing, Akasawa Natural Recreational Forest is a natural coniferous forest of Kiso Hinoki (Japanese cypress trees) of over 300 years old. The forest is home to walking trails, places to stay, workshops, and restaurants, etc. Many people come here to forest bath so they can relax and de-stress.
  • Fujimi Kogen Hana no Sato

    A plateau resort 1,250 meters above ground, you’ll find a “romance area” with zinnias and rudbeckias, and in the “white birch area,” you’ll see Fujimi Kougen heremocallis, hydrangeas, and a number of seasonal blooms. There’s also an observation platform from which you can view Mt. Fuji, the South Alps (Akaishi Mountains), and the North Alps (Hida Mountains) on a sunny day, basking in the grandeur of nature. Handicapped individuals can borrow outdoors wheelchairs for free.
  • Yunomaru Highland

    A highland located on the west side of the Asama Mountain Range along Prefectural Route 94 in Mihari, Tomi City. A mountain climbing route in the area leads from the Jizo Pass 1,700 meters above sea level up Mt. Yunomaru, and from the top, visitors can get a 360-degree panoramic view of the surrounding mountains. Visitors to the area can also find a campground which makes use of the highland's naturally cool weather even in summer, tennis courts, and other facilities, as well as a ski resort in winter.
  • Yachiho Highland Natural Garden

    Yachiho Highland Natural Garden preserves the natural environment of Mt. Yatsugatake and is nearly 28 hectares large. You’ll find plants native to the highlands blooming gorgeously and hear the songs of wild fowl and the babbling of mountain streams. You’ll find three small pathways here, each of which offers a different natural experience.

  • Gosensui Nature Garden

    This natural garden is located 1,830 meters up in the middle of Mt. Tateshina, and is home to approximately 300 kinds of alpine plants and 50 kinds of wild birds. There is a walking course in the park where you can enjoy relaxing strolls taking in the beautiful natural environment. You can reach this nature park from Tateshina Ranch using the gondola lift.
  • Komagane Highland

    A highland located 800 meters above sea level at the foot of the Kiso Mountains (Central Alps). Known as the highest highland area in the Ina Valley, visitors can view such picturesque sights as the Senjojiki Cirque, a valley formed through glacial erosion; Onuma Lake, and Komagaike Pond. The Komagatake Ropeway can be used to reach the top of Mt. Kisokoma, also known as Mt. Komagatake, and the area is a popular destination for mountain climbers. A ski resort also operates in the area in winter.
  • Matsubarako Highland

    This plateau is located in Toyosato, Koumi Town, Minamisaku County near Lake Inako, Lake Choko, and Lake Otsuki, which are collectively referred to as Lake Matsubara. It features a variety of facilities including hot springs and camp grounds as well as sporting facilities such as a skating center and tennis courts. Visitors can also enjoy activities such as boating and strolling along the lakeshore. Anglers can fish for Japanese crucian carp on the lake and even go ice fishing for Japanese pond smelt in the winter.
